I want to challenge the persistent idea that the Cyber-truck is going to be very heavy. Warren Redlich, in a video posted April 2020, calculated an educated estimate of the weight of the Cyber-truck compared to the F150 lightning and Tesla's models S, X, and 3. I recommend watching the video.
His estimates are that the single motor CT will be under 4200 pounds of curb weight. The Tri-motor estimate was set about 5000 pounds.
While this may sound heavy, it is comparable to the weight of the I.C.E. F150, and lighter than the EV F150. The weight is also significantly less than my 1971 F250 by more than 300 pounds.
Now, consider the postulation by Sandy Munro that the Cyber-truck will be using the Carbon fiber wrapped motors that are lighter and much stronger, The die-cast front and rear sections, and the structural battery pack with the 4680 batteries. All of these will lighten the truck further from the estimates provided by Warren R.
Yes, it looks massive, but the dimensions are the same if not slightly smaller than the F150 (I.C.E. and E.V). Yes, it looks like it should be heavy, but in Warren's video he compares the single motor Cyber-truck as similar to the Standard range model 3 (my car).
The Cyber-truck is going to be lighter, stronger, faster, longer ranged, and more capable than any truck on the market.
So, please stop it with the "fat shaming" of the Cyber-truck?

If it’s going to be a “Light Duty Truck” which seems to be the niche they are aiming at, it needs to be under 5,000 pounds in order to meet the guidelines for that size category and haul the claimed 3500 pound load.

Will the different motor configurations on the CT also equate to different suspensions to accommodate the higher capacities?
Just like half, 3/4, and 1 ton pickups have heavier suspensions will the single motor CT have a lighter suspension compared to the tri-motor CT?

Exactly.

Single motor Cybertruck fully loaded might weigh 7800 pounds.
Quad motor Cybertruck fully loaded might weigh 8500 pounds.

Not a huge difference in total weight. You should be able to get more weight on the single motor truck. It would just be a bit of a gutless pig with 4000 pounds in the bed.




PS: I know most people think single motor is dead… same idea applies to dual motor too.

I like the data points added for clarity. But there is no world in which a BEV is going to power 1750-3500 lbs. loaded with a curb weight below 5000# GVW. The CT1 single motor 1750# cargo weight spec lowest GVW I can imagine is ~5800lb curb weight. That’s with gastank MTY!

Then the Cybertruck would not be a light duty truck and any comparisons made versus the F-150 are kind of pointless. And it should be compared to the F250.

The weight and cargo capacity on the Cybertruck are an enigma. Tesla suggested it was same weight as the competition and every comparison they made was to the F-150. Light Duty truck.

Not trying to dispute what you suggest, I would not be surprised if you are right. Just does not mesh with what Musk has said about the truck.

If the truck weighed 5800 pounds as you suggest and had a cargo capacity of 2,700 pounds… that would be fine with me. Still a light duty truck and plenty of capacity for my bikes and even hardware store trips.

But I’m not sold on this idea myself.

It’s going to be extremely interesting what comes out of Austin in ~10-12 months.
