Hardly do backwards walking either unless I'm doing a self sobriety check.

It's just about adequate and reduces cost, which is all Tesla needs to hear really. Though it's certainly not an elegant way of going about it, with it taking space on the screen and all. Similar case, albeit even worse, for the digital side view mirror implementation.

Surprised they didn't just rip the band aid off and removed it entirely, is there a regulation that forces them to sell it with one as is the case with side view mirrors?

Everything changes with the 48v architecture. It's not just a plug and play anymore.

I’d imagine a digital rear view mirror would have been a desirable feature, particularly with the tonneau cover.
How about when tail gate is down or when trailering? Would like to have camera that can be repositioned.

This looks like something that could be useful for the CyberTruck. It can get the mirror view off of the center screen and onto a traditional mirror location. Especially if it can connect to the existing cameras.

wow ... what a great find! worth considering for sure. I do want to watch my kids in the back so they don't set the truck or themselves on fire ( figuratively speaking :) )

few questions for the more knowledgeable members here:

1. does the CT have garage openers somewhere? either physical buttons or app feature?
2. does the CT app offer the ability to record video streams from its cameras? I think so, but I am wondering how does it work... is there some function to allow storage of last 1 hr of video footage for one or multiple CT cameras?

if the answer is yes for both of these questions then Gentex FDM could be more than I need and I may just buy a cheap but good regular rear view mirror for my CT .

but then I read the post about 48v arch blocker and my hopes were adjusted ... my have to go through hoops to install FDM on the CT which further dilutes the value proposition.

most teslas since the introduction of sentry mode wil record onto a USB stick. In the M3 there are two which are used as phone charging ports, from what I can tell there is at least one in the driver's side consol/ storage compartment.

if you've ever driven a cargo van that still has the rearview that was fitted as standard to the cab - you'll understand the frustration of looking at it and seeing a blank panel.
Removing the mirror just acts as a reminder not to look there, just like the insanely popular 3 & Y have already shown how most drivers have easily learned to look to the right for the speedo.

Do cameras, especially the rear one, have auto ISO/exposure adjustment for night time driving? Will the view be obscured when someone blasts the camera with high beams?

Tesla originally had this setup for the prototype. They probably realized they could achieve the same just by putting the feed on the monitor that already exists instead of wiring another one to replace the center mirror.

I feel like the rear view camera being on the screen will be distracting. The normal rear view mirror is something you don’t look up often and so it doesn’t distract you until you need it. On the screen you look all the time, so seeing a camera and moving objects while trying to navigate the screen Inworry will be distracting/almost stressful.

but like every other Tesla change, see once we have it and really know. If it is as I fear, I would definitely get a rear view mirror aftermarket added if someone figures that out
To each his/her own. I do not like looking at the main screen at all while driving, and would really like to have a 'traditional' rearview 'mirror' located in the traditional rearview mirror location, with the proviso that I would be happy with it being a monitor and having both sideviews stitched into it.

If you're going backwards flying you may have a bigger problem
When you are flying you do not have other aircraft next to or behind you so closely that mirrors would do any good, not to mention the vibration.
