How far out does it protrude with the tailgate down? Is it enough to catch half the foot or more?

It catches more than half of the foot. But I dont understand "how far does it protrude with the tailgate down" It protrudes the same distance open or closed of course. You cannot step on it at all with the tailgate down.

Serious question, what's the use of having something like this on there (other than to maybe step up to reach some stuff inside the bed)? If you could use it as a step to get inside the bed it would be great, but you said you can't step on it with the tailgate down.

You can use it to step up and grab something in the bed without having to lower the tailgate.

My issue with metal hitch step is that it can multiply damage to your rear end frame/unibody if another car bump into it. That is why i rather get something that can absorb minor hits (such as Weathertech and Amazon similar solutions).

Also, I can get into the bed easier with the tailgate up. The bumper doesnt have enough room for my foot to get a good grip. And yes, it puts the damage from a rear ender right into the mega casting, not the plastic bumper. I thought of this!!
