Steer by wire with no mechanical backup is absolutely not an improvement. The jury is still out on whether variable steering is an improvement too. Top Gear mentioned not getting used to it even after 2 days. Really the only reviewer I really trust these days is Teslabjorn. He doesn’t suck up to the manufacturers. Downside is he doesn’t get invited to all the launches ;)

But with the above, the massive price hike and apparently no plan at all to bring it to Europe, I’m starting to find the Recon (or the Wrangler BEV when that comes), and the Jimny EV more interesting. I actually just ordered an EV and after a long internal debate it wasn’t the new Highland. I’m just a bit tired of some of the silly stuff around Tesla: the computerised and distracting user interface (no stalks, buttons), the many automatic things that don’t work (and people seriously expect to have their Cybertruck drive them while they sleep in the back?), the expensive repairs … And now the dreadful delivery event (which to me just felt like there was little care for the public) and the way this saga played out with 60% price hikes. Hell, even the F150 is starting to sound more interesting, especially if Ford sticks to the plan of bringing it to Europe.

Some of it seemed like he was auditioning for elon. Take all these reviews with a grain of salt.

I've watched all the reviews so far except
Top Gear. I haven't heard anyone talk about the rear window and boat mode. Have I missed this?

Great video. But disingenuous that they said it went from a 40k vehicle to a 100k…
Not that disingenuous. It went from $70 to $100k, with less range. I guess they could have said there's a 40-50% price increase. I mean the top end got 40% price hike with a 40% cut in range. My percentages are simplified as I don't want to do math this early :D

Thanks for doing this! Hot damn that's so rage-inducing to look at . Do the batteries suck that bad? I get the price and having to do that, maximize profit/cost. What doesn't make sense is how do you not meet the range estimate without a stupid box in the bed? 4680's must be a huge fail, they were lying or they were going to double stack. At this point, it's all moot. Guess I'll check back yearly and see where they're at.

One of the video reviews mentioned the rear window and it is sealed shut and doesn't open. I think it was the British guy.

Chamissa’s review says Tesla sent all other manufacturers a handbook on implementing 48v arch (sometime before Dec 1)

Jim Farley has just confirmed they received it (on Dec 5th)

it’s funny, and seems about time to finally mention this

Tesla fanboi’s often make these quips about “status quo” and “motors haven’t changed in 60 years” etc

and the irony to those quips is that they self-evidence a complete lack of understanding the motivations of truck companies over the past 60 years

Until the mid-2000s, truck companies purposefully kept “the status quo” for reasons of the absolute preferences of their customer base to be able to work on and service these trucks themselves, in their garage, barn, out in the field, or in the back-country. They were designed to be reparable, parts to be plentiful (and back-compatible), and cheap.

My business partner has a 25 year standing offer to engineer at Ford (he went to Intel instead), but will recount his interview with the brass and hiring consultants at the time.

“Tell us, what’s Ford’s greatest market advantage?” (Answer: brand and market position.)

[three other questions, he got right.]

“Tell us, why haven’t our trucks materially changed mechanical design in 40 years?”

He couldn’t come up with it.

Answer from Ford brass: “Because we make trucks for people who need to be able to fix them on the side of the road, themselves, with tools on hand.”

Cut to the mid-2000s and states begin adopting CA’s CARB standards, the fed begins tightening these standards, and the iPhone is introduced.

Increasingly the vehicles became more and more “computer controlled,” tech-forward, and families begin buying, so 2-door variants fall away. Increasingly, “real men” who needed “real trucks” that do”real work” begin complaining they can no longer fix their own trucks.

Cut to today, the fanboi’s quip of “trucks haven’t changed in X years, because traditional OEMs are stupid and ‘maintaining the status quo.’”

Not appreciating that the this homology and simplicity wasn’t an oversight, it was the proposition desired by the client base, and for good, practical, reasons.

OEMs are now off that, in large part by design of these regulations, and for the world it’s a good thing. But it also means that now people, sometimes those same fanbois, complain they can’t fix their own stuff. And that’s a worthwhile cost.

But here we are now, parting Musk on the back for sending around 48v arch, acting like it’s because these other companies couldn’t figure it out. When historically, the point isn’t that the OEMs can’t figure it out, it’s that the truck owners have to be able to figure it out, have ubiquitous parts, and be able to fix the damn things.

The world’s a complicated place and the all-in story is more nuanced than this. It’s just that this is a big part of the story that folks - at least around here - fail to account for.

So, 48v arch is cool and all on some metrics. And frankly, the tech genie is now out of the bottle and never going back in. But it’s not all good news for all folks, esp those who can’t afford $80K trucks, service center visits, and no longer being able to replace a burnt out bulb in their headlight without replacing the entire $850 enclosure.

Now imagine how the second and third world fits into this plot arch.

At least they will get these for US$10,000 (whereas they’ll never be sold in the U.S., not because OEMs are so dumb, but because US regs and fanbois won’t allow it)

When Tesla can do the truck above, for $10K, that’s when I’ll believe they’re saving the world for anyone other than wealthy 1st world country urbanites.
