I think, if we cannot fish it out, there is a way to remove that back wall but it requires removing the side walls First. Pretty difficult job with needing to keep the tonneau cover closed the whole time.

Aren’t kids the ultimate testers to screw things up? Elon only listened to his kid’s truck idea, but he didn’t let his kid test it out. This issue would have been definitely caught. ?

I’m imagining everything I find under the couch - hair clips, toys, cereals, cookies, legos, entire universe - can be found in the Tonneau space after few years!!

Now we need self-cleaning feature for the Cybertruck! ?

Do you know whether iPad cover was magnetic? Probably you can use a magnet tied to a thread to fish it out?

thanks for the idea. No it wasn’t terribly magnetic. It was enough to detect it to lock when flipped closed. We’re going to try to fish it out tomorrow, but then if unsuccessful (which we probably will be), I’ll be taking it into service on Tuesday. they’re going to laugh at me.

If it's an iPad made in the last three years, there's magnets along the edge to hold and charge the Pencil. They're only strong enough to lift the Air and Mini, though, not enough to lift a Pro or standard.

And only at the right angle, it's very weak.

it CAN be opened. Looking at the service manual is key. The service center should be able to get in there, though someone will have to crawl into the vault to do it…

I’m sure there’s also a way to just remove the tonneau cover by sliding it out over the tailgate. They must be able to do this to replace it or fix any damage.
My service center said it was an easy action to remove the entire tonneau.

I wonder if you asked them if they tried with cover closed as we cannot open it or we damage what’s down there.

You might want to avoid metal fish wires as they might scratch the Tonneau cover. Probably use two nylon threads with a hook on each, and try to anchor the two corners of the iPad to fish it out. Good luck!

Don’t forget to post on YouTube. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before some other kid throws something else there, and don’t worry anybody going to laugh. This is a valid scenario. I can totally imagine resting against the back wall in the truck bed while camping and accidentally dropping something in that space. I don’t know how Tesla has managed to keep that space clean from dirt/debris/snow. I remember Jerry from Jerryrigeverything showed a little tiny plant growing underneath Rivian truck bed. Hope CT doesn’t have that problem with this Tonneau space. We want a green truck, but not this type of green! ?

The tonneau is not rolled back so no need to worry about scratching it. Thank you though.

Got it! I’ll throw few more ideas then -
1. Put a 3M tape to a flat spatula/stick. I have done this once to get items out of narrow spaces.
2. Attach small suction cups to a stick and press the cups against the iPad screen. These adhere really well to smooth glass. You will have a strong hold to pull it out.
3. See if you can use the fold of the cover to lift it out. You just need a long thin pole to wedge it out.

What you need is a few feet of semi-stiff fabric, like leather or canvas, that you can lower into the void doubled-over (similar to a hanging file folder). Then you can just nudge the iPad over to rest inside the fold, and lift it out.

This would much easier with a live view camera, but the image you posted earlier seems like very low quality. You might even be better off with just a mirror, but I'd hate for you to drop something else in there lol.

The techs will laugh with you, not at you. Just like all of us are doing ;)

I didn't see you mention if you have opened the tailgate, crawled to the front of the bed and looked down the gap behind the window. Since the cover is closed, this section should be mostly open, the reason you can see into the bed from the back seat with the cover closed. If you have only been looking from on top of the cover, it's a long way down, but from inside the bed it shouldn't be that far and you might get a hold of it, you'll need a flashlight and a mirror. Maybe you've already looked at from this location, hopefully not.

Good luck either way.

We’ve only been in bed. We used 4’ long rigid snake camera to, very difficult mind you, angle it down all the way over the angular hump, to get that picture. We can’t use adhesive because it will stick against wall before we reach iPad. It’s insanely difficult to meander through the obstacles.

Thanks all for the ideas.
