We can only hope for an aftermarket battery upgrade at this point. It seems like Tesla is dropping the ball with other promised Cybertruck features such as Autosteer (Enhanced Auto Pilot) and no matrix headlights, although the latter was never baked into the design anyway. Now I’m doubting if unsupervised FSD will ever be made available for the Cybertruck, even after it comes out for the SEXY models.

There won't be an aftermarket upgrade that will be connected to the main HV battery and BMS. Tesla doesn't allow it. That's why no one else has done it successfully for any model.

I was actually referring to a complete battery pack upgrade under the floor, but an aftermarket product could be developed like the GoSun solar/battery pack that can also serve as a “reserve tank” and connect to the charging port in emergency situations. Not a seamless solution, but a solution nonetheless.

There's a model S with a custom battery pack, but with this you need a custom software solution to predict range, charging, bms. It's possible, but not really for most consumers.

Well clearly. If they offered a battery with more range I'd jump on that in a heartbeat even if I had to pay for it. Wouldn't say there's no chance but a slim one.

Propane generator is probably going to be the best option in terms of cost/ weight/ recharging for reserve tank.

I can tolerate all the rest, but that would be a bridge too far and a breach for which I would sue 100%. On this it’s pretty simple, as far as I’m concerned— they’ll preform, or they’ll pay. No two ways about it.

I just bought the Cybertruck a few months ago (and sold my Rivian R1T Max Pack) because the extended pack would give it the range to tow 300 miles with my RV trailer (and for the free supercharging). Without the extended battery pack it is only about 200 miles with my RV trailer. That is a HUGE difference when towing around the country. Now I wish I kept my Rivian as it had more range in the max pack. I overpaid (as I could have bought a used Cybertruck with low miles) for a new 2024 Foundation Series, because of the Free Supercharging (it will take 3-5 years of supercharging to get it back the instant depreciation) and the extended packs ability to be the long 300 miles towing vehicle. This feels like a class action lawsuit in the makings as it is part of the order screen and promotion/decision to purchase the Cybertruck (false pretenses/advertising?). While there may not be a large number of buyers that want it, for those that did need it, they should still follow through with delivering the extended pack, even if they lose money! How can Telsa piss off the customers/owners that bought the flagship product of the future. I just lost $20k+ as now I have to sell and buy another EV with more range, ugh! Lesson learned and customer loyalty & trust forever burned. So now Elon is not only pissing of his past customers that made him the richest person in the world (mostly green focused democrats) but now his current & future ones!? Is the Tesla Board and Marketing Department falling asleep at the wheel? Or maybe they are all robots, now? Yep, I am pissed/disappointed/bummed and burned...

you should probably go with the silverado. you can get them used under 50k now. if I was towing at all I would get one.

Yep, thank you, I have that one on the list. I am hoping Rivian comes out with a bigger max pack option (there has been rumor on this). The Cybertruck is the best driving truck, Rivian R1-T is next (their steering is too soft/light, but everything else is great!), then maybe a distant 3rd is the GM EV truck (not a very efficient truck relative to CT and Rivian, so the cost of energy would be a lot more per mile. And drives like a big truck! The CT and Rivian you can get around tight places, no problem. My trailer is relatively small/nimble, so don't need a BIG truck, which is what makes the CT with extended battery so perfect for my use, and why I bought it!). Fords do not have good enough range, so they are out. I am going to hold out until next Spring and see if Rivian comes out with a bigger battery. Even if Tesla comes out with a bigger battery later with the 2026 CT, I will go back to Rivian (especially if they have better range) as they have a true customer first experience model, vs this BS from Tesla (I can't even call in or email my feedback!).

I need this for my regular 400 mike commute. I hate having to stop midway for an hour to charge..takes me anhour longer than an ice car commute..so im am very disappointed in Elon.

This is not the first time Tesla pivoted. Folks may remember how they were proposing battery swap stations, and then it got cancelled. Hopefully they have something lined up as a functional replacement for the cancelled Extender.

Yeah, it's called "Superchargers". Lots of them.

And pay 16k for it. And take up half the bed space. I use the bed a lot. I really don't plan on towing. So for me the extra batteries would be worse.

I don't know what the official efficiency number would be but when I fill the back of the truck up and also I fill the backseat area I lose a lot of range. It's a pretty big difference when I am doing a long road trip on the interstate. I have to do an extra charging stop when I have the truck full.

Check your ttire pressure.

The appropriate pressure is not fixed, it varies with your total vehicle weight. Extra payload should only affect the efficiency by a few percent.

Whatever they had in mind, even with Tesla I'm not accepting they had no preliminary design before announcing it. Granted, not all their designs do not turn out to be practical.

Based upon the relatively small number of people who put deposits for the range extender, and the number that have since cancelled, there just weren't enough buyers for it to make sense. Also, from a physics and economics standpoints, it didn't make a lot of sense either.

I'll caveat all the above by saying I live in Texas where it's wide open roads with 75mph speed limits. If you're in dense urban areas where you're driving under 55mph all day, prob not as big an issue.

I travel in mostly rural areas where normal cruising speeds are 50-60 mph. Infrequently, I take a trip into the "big city", or go on a long road trip but, even when I do, I'm impressed with the efficiency at higher speeds. The density of Superchargers, and the speed of charging, makes this a non-issue unless you are trying to minimize the cost of charging.

I don't care much about the cost of charging but motorcycle sport-touring taught me that time in the saddle beats high cruising speeds, almost every time. When I have long distances to cover, I prefer to leave early, avoid congestion, and just keep driving (at a sensible speed), while not feeling rushed or obligated to add 10 mph to the speedo. Any charging/rest breaks are welcome additions.
