I might dislike xwitter more than I like staying in topic

meanwhile, the range extender uptake at this stage doesn’t surprise me that much, for at least 3 reasons

for one thing, not that many people need that much range

For another thing, people aren’t yet living with the CT to know just how far south of stated range these will be for many driving/accessory habits

but maybe moreso, even for folks who ā€˜need’ or want the range even given the stated CT ranges, there arent that many of those people who want it bad enough to fork out another $16K on top of the Foundation pricing

all-in, a Cyberbeast with RE will be over $150K out the door

And all to lose ~30% of bed volume and ~50% of bed utility?

A person can choose all that in an AWD, or the ~similar cost for a beast with full bed?

If anything, I’m surprised there’s as much as 25% uptake

but people coming to this forum (or to Sawyer Merritt directing people to this forum), prob aren’t a great sample pool

Or maybe the people who were able to place an order for the truck were people who put early deposits back in 2019 during the original unveiling. Let’s face it, most of those people probably will not be using the truck for real truck use cases.

for the most part, most truck owners need to tow, not to mention Tesla seems very quiet on the details of the truck such as specs and dimensions. Most people are finding these details from ā€œleaks or these Tesla fanboysā€ and not from Tesla directly.

for the general public, it is a hard sell considering there are no test drives, limited information (hence all the misinformation and uninformed people on social media who probably are not this forum) on the truck. Even in the show rooms, the truck is roped off. The reps won’t even open the doors or tonneau cover.

the only thing this truck has going for it is that it is made by Tesla, and it is so polarizing at the moment. But only time will tell if it will sell well enough. People keep pointing out the xx deposits. But that is irrelevant considering it was $100 and the original price of the vehicle was thousands less. Not to mention over inflated range.

Of course they are, but I don’t see the relevance

ā€œrealā€?

statistically, a minority of truck owners tow - especially 1/2 ton truck owners.

Tesla seems very quiet on the details of the truck such as specs and dimensions.
what specs and dimensions are you missing, exactly?

because Tesla’s releases most everything any other manufacture does, short of yet publishing the owners manual online

on one hand, I get it

on the other hand: Tesla is less than a month into hand-selecting limited edition trucks to sell to earliest ā€˜foundation’ reservation holders, and not yet to any ā€˜general public’

I don’t believe technical production has even begun

which all means that, for the moment, people have to buy a CT the same way people had to buy the new corvette, just about every new Ferrari, etc.

Not to mention: I received one of the first two Ford Lightning’s in Texas a month after deliveries began, and like most buyers after me in that first year, had never seen nor driven one before I took delivery.

Then there’s every Tesla model release before the CT, which worked just about the same as with the CT.

none of which is to discount that there aren’t genuine frustrations on the part of potential buyers.

instead that those buyers are probably a bit out over their ski’s in terms of expectations from any manufacturer for a product release like this, Tesla or otherwise

I AM surprised at the RE uptake. I’m surprised it is this high!

im a bit reduced in my net surprise ( :ROFLMAO: ) only by the current context:

(1) people willing to fork over $100K/120K for a sight-unseen truck likely tend to have some f*ck-it money

(2) for now, it's just a $500 deposit, so why not keep pay for the option (to learn more about it, then decide)

Or some people knew this time was going to be here and have put some funds to the side for this purchase. Not always the F type of money. Tesla owners in my thought tend to be planners ahead type. Assuming many things for me has led to surprises occasionally in life.

The concept is not my liking, but I can see the purpose it could provide. So if the shoe fits. Put it on, don't just think about it.

i didnt say everyone who reserved a RE had fuck-it money - i just think the percentage skews upwards due to it

meanwhile, i doubt that anyone was planning ahead for a $16K range extender that would put the price of an AWD CT at $116K and a Beast at $136K, before TTL

that pivot probably relies disproportionately on f*ck it money (at least where their vehicle priorities are concerned)

but yes, people planning ahead are also probably disproportionately receiving invites and reporting them on this forum, alongside people with f*ck it money - these and other things mentioned in earlier post possibly causing the chart data on RE uptake to be a bit inflated compared to the gen pop

Tesla Cybertruck Range Extender take rate ~25%? Screenshot_20231224-200111

Apparently that type of money appears lots of places, and different brands as well. I see many of these running around. Not so quiet either. The various types that get out of these could be described in many different ways. The one above doesn't have a range extender. Yet it is in that price, and wasn't hard to get it there.

I’m afraid some of these people may think this is something they can take in and out of the truck at will.

You’re kidding right? If we were to go to Tesla.com right now and compare to Ford Lightning, I’m sure I can find the dimensions and options available for the Truck. Let’s say for example bed dimensions and features.

For a vehicle that has not started deliveries I can understand, however we are past that already. It would be nice to see what options we can get, even if they do not give a price since it is always a moving target.

For example, do we know if the seats are heated and cooled? I do because it was mentioned in a YouTube video of a walkthrough. But it is not mentioned anywhere.

Are they offering an all black interior? Personally I would prefer all black for my use case.

Do the rear seats fold up? Yes they do, but that is because we are on this site or looking up videos. But nowhere on the site does it say it’s a 60/40 split.

Even for the bed, it does not specify dimensions, or even the power features available.

However on Ford’s site, it is pretty detailed on the options available. And to be fair, Tesla does not give us a lot of options to begin with so it’s not like it is a difficult task.

As for the ā€œrealā€ comment, what I meant was, most of America’s truck owners were not watching the 2019 reveal and putting a deposit seconds from unveiling, so the majority of people taking early deliveries are Tesla employees, VIPs, and early reservation holders.

it’s doubtful to think your average Joe working at a job site who was already very critical of an ā€œelectric carā€ was itching to put a deposit on an ā€œelectric truckā€ especially one that looks so polarizing and different in 2019.

lastly, even if very few people who own trucks tow, that is not why people buy trucks. If that were true why even have an EV have more than 100mi range since the average daily commute is less than that?

Americans love trucks because they ā€œcanā€ tow, go off roading and haul things that a normal vehicle cannot do. Hence why we have all of these lifted modified trucks, because it is all a measuring contest about specs, which in reality does not really matter for day to day use cases. But some people have money to burn, or just really bad with money.
