IMO: Tesla should NOT have abandoned LIDAR in lieu of vision only based navigation. All you care about when moving a vehicle is the distance from things around that.

Cameras do not determine distance - you can by interpolation using stereo cameras 'derive' distance...but that is not the same a knowing the distance directly.

The idea is that eventually with time and repeated experience the AI will be as accurate using the cameras as the lidar would have been anyway. It just takes time to train it. More accurate than a human would be at estimating distance anyway.

This isn't true. It was always possible to miss the reconnection after navigating the shift plate, although the failure mode was more likely neutral - many people have been crushed by automatic cars in the past. Since they depended upon a fluid drive or a friction drive, the act of getting out of the vehicle would change the rolling resistance and the vehicle would start to move. It's not a new phenomenon.

Lexus: The lexus accident DID happen - True. Yes the issue was 'mechanical' however, the other electronics of the car did not provide for shutting the car off. The CHP driver did actually try to 'Press-n-hold' the Engine Start button...which our moden age IS a viable method to 'shutdown' most electronic devices. [The Lexus however, did not have the option]

...He could not remove the key - as that would lock the steering column...[BTY: Some earlier 'sports' cars had a key and a start button...it was a cool thing back in the day]

Old Shift Level: Yes, many many people have died from mechanical gear failure, slippage, and countless other mechanical transmission, shift mechanism issues.

The point is the function of putting a 6,600 pound 600 HP vehicle into Drive or Park incorporates such inherent danger - that the feedback and method to do so should not be subtle.

I've not had any real issues with shifting my CT, the shift-swipe is quite responsive. Also, Tesla did take advantage of it's electronics in when you as a driver, unlock your seat belt the CT goes into park. [if you're not moving] The CT also makes a sound when you put it into Park.

Also opening the CT door [while not moving] will put it into Park...All very excellent applications of safety redundancy - employing the electronics of the vehicle to detect states and put the vehicle in a safe state.

I'd not have a problem if the CT had an E-Stop button...and it should. Nearly ALL Medical devices have E-Stops, to cover those events that were not planned for, or expected to occur.

Consider the Tesla Touchscreen requires a conductive / Capacitive contact [your finger] to sense the touch and respond. Meaning you need a naked finger or 'touch' glove to active the screen. Technically: This means you need 'a specific tool' to operate the vehicle.

IMO, it was a good decision. It reduced the price, and is potentially upgradable by future software.

Alright so this happened to me today for the first time:

Pulled up to a car wash, there’s a wide parking spot with a red pole to block the end, vacuumed the car myself and got back in. Put it in reverse and very cautiously looked around to make sure no one was behind me and I felt the car move forward. Immediately I start thinking “You moron you put it in forward drive”. Reached to switch it to reverse only to see that it already was.. gave it another tiny tap and once again the truck moved forward. Pulled out my phone to record it but it was such a small distance to show the example you can barely tell. Was getting really close to the red pillar in front of the truck so I couldn’t keep on the pedal.

Shut the truck off and booted it back up and it continued to do it. For a moment I was thinking of calling service for help but I put it in forward to see what it would do. Burned up my last inch of space going forward. Put it back in reverse, MOMENT OF TRUTH.. am I going to hit the poll in front of me or will it finally back up? With the tiniest of cautious pressure from my big toe, JUST like the scene from SpongeBob, the truck moves backwards and saves me embarrassment and a heart attack.

Sorry for the long story, just one of those comedic situations but I wanted to share the example in case anyone else is experiencing this bug?

Good to know as I park close to expensive things at my house! I’ve only had it “auto select” the wrong direction several times -Reverse when I’m like 10 inches from my other vehicle, behind me. I turned off auto select direction for a while and then re-enabled it for 45.32.20. It DOES say BETA so I have to be careful. However, “physically” selecting a direction and having the truck go opposite is a big no-no! ?

I bought mine August 15th. Probably a few months afterwards, the same thing happened to me, it scared me. I'm real careful now, but as far as I can tell, it only happened that one time. I didn't report it.

You can although you gotta be strong. In my panic I didn’t think do put it in neutral and push it back a couple inches. Will try that if it happens again.

I'd would like to know that too... I do not think it has a 'neutral'.

Anecdotally: when the battery completely dies - you have to have it dragged up the tow truck ramp..

I think DOT will soon require an E-Stop which will allow the EV to roll.

This happened to me two weeks ago and was like a quarter of an inch from running into something. I put it in reverse, it went forward. I checked it was in reverse, it went forward. I put in park and put back into reverse again and it went in reverse.

I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple months ago. I was parallel parked and a car was in front of me and behind me. Had it in reverse to get enough room to pull out and the car moves forward. Put it in park and tried again, still moves forward. Now I have about 2 inches to the car in front of me. I performed a reset and tried one last time and thankfully this time it went in reverse.
No clue what the issue was and it hasn’t happened since

I'm inclined to believe the OP, but few will take it seriously without video evidence, particularly since it occurs rarely.

Two others beside the OP said it has happened to them tho.
