The idea is that eventually with time and repeated experience the AI will be as accurate using the cameras as the lidar would have been anyway. It just takes time to train it. More accurate than a human would be at estimating distance anyway.IMO: Tesla should NOT have abandoned LIDAR in lieu of vision only based navigation. All you care about when moving a vehicle is the distance from things around that.
Cameras do not determine distance - you can by interpolation using stereo cameras 'derive' distance...but that is not the same a knowing the distance directly.
