Gandi and Confucius both warned us before:

"Never wait for something promised by that guy named Elon Musk from South Africa. Enjoy your life as usual. Live like a normal person on earth as if you have heard nothing from that person."

Peace.

I can understand, as those who perceive having a longer outlook might not realize how fleeting life and time is - and thus may be more frivolous with their time estimates. Elon's not perfect, but he is both tackling and accomplishing a phenomenal amount albeit some of it happens on 'Elon Time'.

But I would certainly put more faith in Elon Musk's word than I would in Mary Barra's by far. Yet again I understand when one might not be sure of how much time they can wait. Best of luck to you.

I think with inflation plus supplier cost factors along with people wanting the truck slightly smaller to fit into a garage had some effects. Remember when there was a back and forth where Elon said the Cybertruck was going to smaller on the Jay Leno episode, but then there seemed to be push back for a short time to keep it at the original size?

The original size would've allowed room for a larger battery, but it would not have fit into most garages. There may also have been some regulatory or design input from overseas as well that would either require the truck to be smaller or strongly suggest it, in order for it to sell in those markets. So I think making the truck smaller might've prompted the extender option to be designed, but I of course don't know for sure.

Time will tell. When people tow a trailer, they inherently have more room in the trailer itself so I would think a loss of 1/3 vault space isn't a huge problem when towing. I think it's a good idea because the extender should be able to be removed when not towing for a long time, and allow more space for regular use as a truck and daily driver.

If you read "Elon Musk" by Walter Isaacson, you will know his mode of operation.
First he sets a ridiculously mad goal with one absolutely out of whack deadline.
Then It drives everyone nuts. Some will quit. Some stays to try to achieve this goal.
At the end it draws the last drip of blood out of these dedicated smart people in order to meet the deadline.
That's how all of his achivements were made so far. In this process, he will inevitably miss goals, dissappoint many people, sacifice a ton, and build a bunch.
Be a witness to it. Enjoy the ride (just don't be fooled by him) and the product once it's matured (the current CT is not).

The chart is for YOU to compare; not me comparing it for you. Looking across, looking up and down, your call, your choice, your conclusion. That's what the matrix is for.

you're comparing the beast mode as the competition to a 70k Rivian? don't spin the numbers.... the dual motor is the model to compare and it beats the Rivian handily.

Time will tell. some will financially actuate benefits differently than others, so I'm sure you don't need any convincing from me to be comfortable with your time focus or priorities. I'm not certain whether I'd get the extender or not myself either, as I may not even need it as the base range is more than my Model 3 and I've been perfectly happy with that range for over five years now.

There are a lot who will not tow very often though, or rarely tow seriously heavy loads so I understand why Tesla decided it would be pointless to haul extra weight around with an integrated battery all in one. Elon mentioned that on a couple of occasions. While an unconstrained larger battery would offer extra range, it also becomes less efficient due to increased energy per mile hauling the extra weight around, in many cases where the range is not used or actually needed.

The Hummer EV is a very atrocious example of such inefficiency, weighing in over a 2000 pounds more than the Cybertruck, and it requires much more watt-hours per mile as a result. So optimizing a weight and battery size combination gives both decent range while also keeping the energy efficiency, and the extender allows one to choose the best option for their use case, allowing the best of both worlds depending on the situation. I thought the cost of the extender might be less but who knows the cost might come down if the 4680 cells ramp up to much larger economies of scale.

For your last question though, many business owners may be eyeing the Cybertruck for commercial use and considering carefully the business expense so for them initial expenditures might be more doable if they've determined that the long term operating costs overall will still give a return on the investment. But I agree with you that many regular consumers will likely not want to pay for such an extender right away, even though a few might plan on getting it later after using their Cybertruck for a while to see how it does without it first. That's another nice benefit of it being separate, in that one can choose to buy a range upgrade later if they want without major modifications or a whole battery pack swap out.
