Warped tailgate issue after hauling load

I thought this was supposed to be a work truck. I’m scared haul my dirt bikes on it now. Let me know if anyone has any experiences with dirt bikes on it. I don’t wanna bend the tailgate on mine.

The tailgate does not have an official weight limit from Tesla, but their tailgate ramp is rated at 750lbs.

Unless your bikes are made of tungsten, I think you'll be fine.

Help!!! I lightly backed into a 4x4 wood post with the tailgate down. Now the right side of the tailgate needs minor force to close and open. The right hinge is off about 1 degree from square. The left hinge is square.

Did you not use the reverse camera when the tailgate was down? /s

It sucks how the YouTubers compare hitch capacity between trucks , at over the 10,000 lbs rating, but don’t actually test thing like the tailgate weight between “real” trucks an CT. Something actually helpful.

It sounds to me like you tried to use it as a truck. You can’t do that. Just like you can’t let the tonneau cover get dusty, cause that will cause it to fail and they don’t cover that either (or so I’m told…mines just busted and I haven’t bothered seeking help…I think it’s just broken by design so I might as well get used to it).

At least they do replace the failed glue parts!

One of our houses is in the county and on a dirt road. Our vehicles get a ton of dust on them.

Can you explain further how the dust caused your tonneau cover to stop working? Where did the dust/dirt accumulate? Would washing off the tonneau cover weekly prevent the dust buildup and future problems?

I have no worries here. And the latches can be adjusted. This is like a non-point.
If you are a jerk and back into a tree like me, then you CAN damage the tailgate. And STILL adjust the latches. I'm running fine with mine and waiting until I can scrap up a new tailgate near me more cheaply than the $4k list.

My bike is 700 lbs without a rider when loaded for long distances. The 2025 BMW GSA is 593 pounds wet, without luggage. Add panniers and a top case with some tools, etc, I am at 700 pounds. Add a rider, and I’m pushing 900 pounds.

This is a common problem for desert folks.

I had this problem. I got the gate back level by bending the striker plates, but I had a tailgate error on the screen as well. Turns out it damaged the latches in the gate when the striker plates bent. Tesla replaced all of it for about 500 bucks and good as new. The only durability issue I have had with my truck so far.

Warning to everyone about hauling items. I was hauling a load of 12 foot composite decking boards today. I made sure that the weight limit was not exceeded, however, since the load shifted, it obviously put too much weight on the tailgate and now the tailgate is warped. Fortunately still shuts but it clearly bent the stainless steel and it now has a gap.


So caution about this possibility. Perhaps I should have known, but alas I was unaware of the potential.

Those that have had warped tailgates and feel its a design flaw, meaning you know the max load and did not exceed, did you escalate to Max Morrill at Tesla?
