I wonder if they will offer a factory electric trailer brake controller to complement the hitch?

I imagine the necessity of a 12v TBC and the 16v accessory battery for stuff like winches and lights is why Elon stated “85% 48v architecture”

The biggest issue I see with the diaper or what I would call an aero fairing is that its either a) highly vulnerable to offroad damage because of departure angles or b) will need to be pulled off to “go offroad” which doesn’t always mean it was planned for and if the bed is already full, where does it go?

I’m saying for the tow hitch, that middle 1/3rd is what comes off.

I have an image of it off if you’d like to see. But you have it too.. Y’all miss a lot of detail in the fuzz sometimes.

Go watch the Texas drive by video the other day. It’s off and exposed.

and if you look closely, that bottom, forwardmost, edge of the diaper trim will be susceptible to catching on a rock / limb and will be removed for “free” by the trail

I suspect that people intending to be on trails with regularity will remove the diaper entirely, exposing the CTs hangy-down giblets

based on the size of hitchlink i’m nearly 100% positive that it’s a class 5, which is 2.5”
If there’s a 3” hitch out there im not sure ive ever seen one at least not on a 1.5T / 4500 class truck

don’t fret there. Nearly everyone that pulls a boat with electric brakes uses a 7pin to 4 pin adapter, vs crossing over the basically universal brown wire to trigger brakes along with lights. Reese makes a really good one thats ~ $15
Pro tip: pack if full of dialectric greese and it’ll last a lifetime. If you’re concerned about the mess, toss it in ziplock freezer bag

the trend in the industry is to eliminate the 4 pin and instead use the space for a trailer camera plug. I don’t see an accommodation for trailer cams which is either a big oversight or maybe they are opting to use a connection in the bed, which would be fine IF a gooseneck is an option but would keep the vault from being shut all the way for those using a bumper bull trailer.

what I really don’t like about this hitch for towing is the flap for the 7 pin opening down vs up. Some tech thats probably never towed simply installed it wrong but id hope that would immediately stand out to someone that should be in charge of hitches.

also, while the chain loops look plenty robust, being parallel with bottom of the female end invites interference with the the hitch pin and the hooks and potentially wear on the female as the hooks jostle around. Most of the newer trucks angle the outside ends toward the tires to avoid this.

Yup, the dually trucks come with 3". Non-dually superduty trucks come with 2.5".

thats news to me but thats probably because my newest HD truck from any brand is a 2017.
Thats gotta be way over CT capacity but I’m not mad at it. Seems like it would almost require an airport runway to turn a bumper pull trailer around thats heavy enough to require whatever the load rating must be. Maybe some super specialized triple axle dump trailer a mega yacht RV. Goosenecks/ 5th wheels work work way better for anything like IMO

definitely opens up the door for someone to rock a dumptruck pintle and cybertrucknuts ?

I think ford started theirs around 2017, but not certain. They’re the only brand I know that uses a 3”. Everyone else uses 2.5” as the largest (I have a Ram 4500 as well) I think you are right about CT being a 2.5 too.

I should clarify:

the alpha I’m showing as evidence of where the frame/recovery mounts are. It’s true that in the alpha they’ve done some extra punching out in order to attach those push bars, but also look ‘above’ those cut-outs:

but note also in the alpha photo above the depth of the ‘lip’ around this area that is now absent in the pre-production prototype, which now instead as a nearly flush trim piece with what is very clearly a trim panel with a gap all around it

assuming the CT needs to offer access to the frame/recovery points behind this trim panel - because they do - then it makes the most sense to me that this new trim piece on the pre-production is removable to reveal the recovery points

I see what you're saying, by 'second 2/3' you mean just the flat panel. Yes, I agree, that would make sense.

contrast with your apparent notion that the entire diaper removes:

I think it’s uncontroversial that snap fasteners would allow the entire diaper trim to be removed. Same goes for the entire front grill assembly in my F150. That’s just how these sorts of things are attached/removed

but that’s different from the sorts of access panels an OEM might provide for regular operation access to functional bits like the recovery points, while leaving a clean-ish/finished look

no doubt the entire diaper is removable, like my front grill assembly

But there are no less than 14 of those snap fasteners on the entire diaper assembly, and I don’t expect Tesla to think that’s how - eg - an off-roader in the field is supposed to access the recovery points, and then throw a bumpers-worth of trim in the bed of the truck

I find it interesting because ideally, from a lean design (©Munro) perspective, you'd want it to be one single piece with the rest of the bumper so as not to have to use a bunch of extra fasteners and purchase more tooling. Unless you want that area to be accessible for a specific reason that is ... a spare like on the Lightning ?
