The one thing we know and makes me sad is that there is no mid-gate between the cab and the bin.
I wouldn't give up completely on the mid-gate just yet.
It's possible that the first trucks are the entry level trucks and will not have mid-gates to make the first trucks less complex and expensive to produce.
I think Tesla wants to hit the ground running and produce a ton of Cybertrucks at a great price to completely disrupt the truck market, not just the electric truck market.

And with Elon’s hint at the Lightning being too expensive, maybe somewhere between $60K and $70K (compared to the Lariat)?
What do you think of the dual being priced at $49,990? Somewhere I heard a "rumor" that it will be priced at that. :)

It would be highly unlike Tesla to have a feature like this not be on all trims due to their focus on manufacturing efficiency. Having a version with and without a midgate is not a minor part that can be swapped in and out on the line. It would require large differences in the manufacturing of the vehicle and probably separate lines to manufacture.

For existing trucks from other manufactures that have midgates, are they ever optional? Its not something that strikes me as being something you just add on to a design. The vehicle is either designed around having one or it is not.

The difference of exoskeleton skin or Exoskeleton will be if the Stainless steel is bolted or welded to the internal structure. If welded the origami skin, triangular will definately be a structural component of the vehicle. Triangle are the strongest shape. The truck will be a truss on wheels!
I think it will be a structural skin. Perhaps the frame will crumple in an accident rather than the steel plates. This way they’ll absorb the shock instead of the occupants inside. It’s all very fascinating.

That would be amazing! Based on Elon‘s recent comments about the Lightning being too expensive vs. his comments at the shareholders’ meeting in May, there’s definitely something going on. It’s not the first time Elon has pivoted and gone in a different direction with things. It also seems like Tesla is going to launch the Dual Motor first with about 350 miles of range. This might be the sweet spot. I hope they’re going to release the specs and pricing soon, so we can all stop speculating.

I don’t think the fear of competition is a motivating factor. I think they are under pressure from Elon to get the costs down without losing anything in the process.
That’s my hope anyway ?
it's not fear.... it's about hiding the knife.

Q. when did tesla officially announce no 500 mile variant to start?
A. Never.
Well, technically the answer to your question is "2019." Tesla originally said no Tri-Motor 500 mile vehicle in first year. Nobody still thinks that is valid, but it is what they originally said.

Nobody still thinks that is valid, because it's not.

Tesla updated the targets in Dec 2019, which prompted me to change my reservation from a single to a dual.

"According to Tesla's preorder site for the Cybertruck, the more powerful models will now take priority when production is scheduled to start. Recall, Tesla originally said the least expensive models with the Single Motor option would go into production first in late 2021, followed by the Dual-Motor Cybertruck also in late 2021. The biggest, baddest planned Cybertruck, the Tri-Motor, was scheduled for late 2022.

Now, the preorder site says the Tri-Motor Cybertruck model will begin production in late 2021 and the cheapest of the electric pickups has been bumped to late 2022. This seems like a pretty typical move, to launch the trucks with the highest chance of profitability first."

All true enough, but also true was my response to the question:

A. 2019

Do you have a source/reference for when Tesla said no Tri-motor 500 mile vehicle? I don't recall that (not saying it isn't true).
