I don't read it as expensive at all, just difficult. Bending and cutting cheap steel probably isn't quick and on this scale, never done before. It sounds a little similar to production hell to me. But, maybe that's me hoping that's all it is. ?

Little surprising, since they are actually making them. Production volume up in the air a bit for sure, but I would think pricing and specs would be more locked in. Makes me think they may start the price high in low volumes, and bring it down as production becomes smoother. Tesla varies the price on products frequently.

I re-read that and it appears to me that Elon's comment is primarily responding to the "Please announce... the new delivery date." In that context, his response makes much more sense: "When we are ready to do so, we will. While I think it is our best product ever, it is an extremely difficult product to build. We are in uncharted territory, because it is not like anything else."

I think they are well locked in on pricing and specs.

I was always surprised that Tesla didn't simply invent a new "Giga Stamp Press" to handle stamping the SS panels. Giga presses didn't exist either until Tesla pushed for them.

Yeah, his comment was probably about the date, that makes more sense. I didn't read the full exchange until now.
