I really dont get the fascination with panel gaps. The panel gaps are probably .001% of the functional engineering that goes into one of the most high tech vehicles on the planet. But since people see it they focus on it i guess. I promise you wont be that concerned when its in your driveway performing great in 99% of the meaningful ways it needs to.
mother thing is, by focusing on the panel gaps folks seem to skip over the meat of Musk’s tolerances comment: not the gaps, but the straightness of the panels

it’s the wavy, funhouse mirror, bit of the engineering that requires more precision to remedy - not the adjustable gaps between panels.

I wonder if this was a good fit when metal was originally bent but gradually bounced back toward it’s original form because it was not hot enough when it was bent (No idea what the process is or if heating is involved at all).

That side window appears fairly thick. Hope it's still Armour Glass! Wonder if we'll get another sledge hammer or steel balls impact demonstration at an updated reveal with the delivery event?

the roll-over unit seemed pretty clear the front windows are laminated (and windshield as usual), but not the rear or triangle windows

Is this the first we've seen of the rear window rolling all the way down, or did I miss that in other photos?

Great video, thanks for posting!

Anyone know what the patches on Elon's jacket are?

Many people DO appreciate and demand refined fit and finish standards, including consistent panel gaps. Some people do check their car's appearance every time they get in and out of it, to make sure there's no dents, possible misaligned doors due to sagging weak hinges, and general peace of mind they have a vehicle with refined workmanship. I as well as other people I know also check the lines of their vehicle for consistency through their side rear view mirrors occasionally as well.

If panel gaps didn't matter, Audi, BMW, and Toyota would make their vehicles a lot sloppier, like legacy auto did before the Japanese market invasion beginning in the late 1970's. Regardless of what people tried to say about the import cars back then, when people would see a Toyota, Nissan/Datson, or Honda - everyone noticed how much better and tighter the doors, hood, and truck lids fit in those cars. The Japanese workmanship at that time actually forced American car makers to 'up their game' on attention to workmanship as part of quality standards.

Fit and finish really do matter, maybe not to you or some people, but still to a great percentage of people - and why not, as refined workmanship should be in a vehicle for the price we're paying.

I've had vehicles with poor workmanship, and I've had vehicles with refined workmanship. I ALWAYS can tell the difference, and once I see something, I Can Never 'Un-See' it.

I made additional comments on this subject in the post linked below:

When you have a vehicle with poor workmanship, many people might notice it, but very few will discuss it with you to your face (unless they are comfortable being honest with you). Many more people will talk about those defects behind your back though (and the choice you made). So the workmanship is not just for the owner, as it is also for how the vehicle is a continuous example to others, and how it represents the Brand. That does affect vehicle demand because many people don't want to buy a vehicle that might be fraught with workmanship issues in a design.

With today's manufacturing technology, people expect a refined vehicle - and why shouldn't they?

Tesla had better not allow lapses in their workplace culture for standards of fit and finish, because if they do, the naysayers will have a field day. Elon's already expressed his requirements on the subject, so let's hope they are implemented effectively on the lines.

If that is from springback, it should be something that over time they minimize and can compensate for - assuming the variables stay constant.

that said, keeping these variables constant in the context of mass auto assembly has been something that folks have long said Tesla would would be challenged by

this angle is definitely my favorite for the CT but I am definitely putting 50-60% tint on the windshield.

that wheel is gonna feel odly tiny to me.
like an arcade racing game.
That's why I love it. Takes me back to playing Pole Position or the original sit-down Star Wars.

Can't say much about it as I promised these forums I wouldn't until about a 1,000 or so delivered Cybertrucks are running around. So without creating a new thread or anything, I'll just leave this right here:

( I really hate posting this )

I'll rant in detail again if it's still an issue after those 1000 or so deliveries (let's hope it isn't by then though).

All surfaces are "wavy", depending on the scale. Even glass will show defects under the correct conditions.

I think Cybertruck will show more of this effect due to the shininess of the bare metal.

It bothers me not.

I have yet to see anyone go over Toyotas with a caliper.

-Crissa
While there are specialized tools for checking and measuring gaps, their purpose would be for quality checks of a a car before it's delivered to a customer, or as sample quality checks on a manufacturing line.

So these measurements wouldn't be made very often in public view at all.

However, most panel gap issues don't need any calipers to see the difference, as visual acuity for many people is quite enough to notice such things. Many people noticed the difference between American and Japanese cars when they began importing back in the 70's and 80's.

I'm just hoping the workplace and manufacturing culture is not trying to Regress to what it was before the Japanese 'invasion' back then.

Because guess what - the Chinese are next - and they are definitely on top of their Quality Game.

I agree with you in principal for a limited material sample - but there have been distinct and consistent differences in the doors vs the vault sides, so that's what will be noticed and generate questions if it persists (I'll go into more detail at a later time).
