The cyber truck range extender is an amazing idea and invention, but Tesla should create it as a removable set of lightweight modules that you could install/assemble and remove in 15/20 minutes by yourself 50 pound-ish each able to mount on the bed of the truck would provide very long towing range, and easy to take out when not needed. We could buy more over time to increase range.

I was wondering if they are going to make different options. One that is flat and runs the length of the bed. The other one they have is square looks like it takes up half the bed. It would be nice if they could make it just slide in and out of the bed and be completely flat so you could use the bed. I understand that people are gonna want to use a fifth wheel that’s probably why they made it in a block form towards the front of the bed. But it would be nice to have the option to buy either or.

I agree. I would like it but holding out on reserving until I know more. It would be great if it was modular at least by 3 or i am hoping it's at least removable. I could pull it out with a tractor. I want/need the range but also want the bed available most of the time.

If it was modular I would definitely reserve now.

Keep in mind you'd want something safe and had the proper cooling with the ability to charge at a supercharger with very high voltage/amps. The cooling is likely liquid. I don't think you are being realistic.

~45 lbs = 3 kWh

Tesla has engineered other devices that are more complicated than what a modular battery pack would be, if it doesn't break physics laws than it would be possible. NIO has figured out a way to quick change an entire battery pack this would definitely be doable.

swappable range extenders would be awesome, but Tesla's infrastructure isn't set up for it

Liquid cooling is critical in charging. That adds a ton of complications and connectivity issues (leaking, etc).

Thanks for that chart. I was wondering about the weight of the extender. I forgot about that storage area in the bed. I for one would sacrifice that if it could be incorporated with battery/range. The cooling issue obviously is engineering feet. I have a lot of confidence and respect in Tesla. Tesla built the Beast they can engineer anything.?

As for wiring and plumbing, I would imagine that is what the Service Center is doing when they do the install.

As for offering the CB with a larger battery pack, where do you propose that they put it? I don't think the rear sub-bed locker is large enough, and even if it were, what does that do to the balance?

And a "bigger battery pack" wasn't announced 4 years ago. The just announced a target mileage. And they aren't there, yet. They never discussed battery pack size. On the other hand, the most popular (by reservation measurement) version BEAT the proposed mileage target by more than 10%. Of course, no one wants to admit that.

What if you never had to charge it at a Supercharger?

Suspend your disbelief for a moment.

What if there were a rack of these, sitting charged and/or charging, at most high-traffic superchargers. You unlock a charged one in the app, swap in your depleted one (or not), and continue on your way. Sitting in the rack, think of a server rack or laptop cart, Tesla could likely recharge these at AC-like rates of 7-11kw and for us consumers we'd basically just rent them. We could recharge them at home on AC, along with the rest of the truck, but if Supercharging these cells would not charge - just swappable on road trips. At 40-50lbs each, strap in the capacity you want or even pick them up as needed.

What if that additional 700 lbs in weight for the extended battery (if made permanent when the truck was delivered) made the truck cross the boundary into a class 3 vehicle? Maybe Tesla is trying to avoid that...

That was the intial idea for Tesla semi (pre Cybertruck).

Ten minutes to swap and all sutomated.
