My house is getting a 400A setup from the utility, split into two 200A panels. I've got a Powerwall doing its thing on one of the 200A circuits with a V2 gateway. Now, I'm wondering if it's possible to install the new V3 gateway on the other 200A circuit. Any insights or advice on this situation?
absolutely can.

Received my unofficial estimate over the phone with my assigned electrician here in San Diego. 3k-3500. The hold up is permits, once they have that they can give me an official estimate. Gateway 3 and wall connector included.

My v3 gateway and universal wall connector were installed today. Went very fast and was a very clean install. I was really impressed by the team that showed up. And I’m an EE that is hard to impress. Haha.

The new v3 Gateway design is impressive. Looks similar to v2 but a lot of visible improvements.

For us early adopters there were a couple of surprises

1) Firmware is delayed to March for supporting backup mode. So for now it’s just a breaker box. The firmware update requires them to come back onsite, and won’t be OTA. It’s early enough to where they didn’t even bother to connect the gateway to the WiFi.

2) Initial firmware won’t support having solar on the backup bus. So they won’t connect it. Once it’s supported they will come back and connect it

I have 400A service split into 2x 200A groups. It backs up one of the 200A branches.

Sadly we have storms rolling through here so was hoping I would have a solution. But it’ll need another month to bake. Hoping the support for solar isn’t far behind. I’m wondering if they will slow down the installs until the firmware is ready.

solar support is the main thing that would have me get this version instead of the normal generator plug. I have tesla solar but no powerwall.

Hopefully that comes soon. Congrats on your install!!!

Too bad tesla wont wheel and deal with me lol

Keep all the accessory trinkets, downgrade my tires and give me free install on AWD and ill buy FS right meow.

What was the total price all said and done?

The initial quote was at least $1K more than others in the bay area. Mainly because they thought the install was more complex. But when they arrived they decided to mount the gateway on the interior wall opposite the main breaker box which greatly simplified it. Hopefully I will get a revised quote shortly.

Well in a class action suit with numerous people, providing evidence of a screenshot showing that it was included, would be sufficient evidence. We'll see how it plays out when more people get their cybertruck.
Yeah except virtually everyone who has their truck already elected to settle all disputes through individual arbitration. I'm a litigation attorney and do not think you will have any luck in a lawsuit like this against Tesla.

very cool. Congrats. So it's going to operate like a power wall? If you have 2 powerwalls and solar existing and have the CT connected for share then all three batteries will work together to power the house when sun goes down and solar is off Im guessing.....

For now it does nothing. But in March they will enable the backup function. There is no timeline on supporting solar with the CT yet. But my sense from Tesla is that it is in the software roadmap.

I also hope they unlock time shifting. But they may not out of concern for adding too many battery cycles.

Thanks for the detailed write up! Sounds like you have solar currently. Did the installer or PG&E give you any info on whether adding the V3 will reset your NEM status (ie NEM 2.0 to NEM 3.0)? If so, that's pretty much a death blow for us on beloved PG&E...

so someone like me with a 4k solar system that produces maybe 10kwh a day in summer because of trees blocking and in winter 2k a day production with 2 wall batteries and going to get the power share with Cybertruck what will NEM 3.0 do to me? I already pay $1600 a year in Tru Up Fees....

My installation is happening Monday. Will report back on how it works out with pictures.

My install is a little on the harder side, and will be $5500, not including permit costs. My area tends to charge more than others as well.

Note that you need a strong WiFi at the install site.

Sad to hear we can't use time shift like powerwalls. Good news is we get a 123Kwh battery we can drive around, and recharge our house at a working SC to keep the house functioning long term.
great point and did not consider that, long power outage @ the house, you can drive to the SC, recharge and then back the powering the home, wow, great point
BUT
who has had experience if the SCs continue to operate during a power outage, considering a large outage that takes out the house and local SC
guess I can keep driving to farther SCs until I find one operating

but great point, back and forth to the SC keeping the house powered

No mention of any PGE issues at all. I’m a legacy EVA rate home, so we get really aggressive off peak charges.

Yes I have a nice 11kw solar array. Hopefully when the gateway software supports it I’ll connect it up to the gateway. For now they are under explicit instructions to not connect the solar to the gateway.

99.9% of outages I’ve experienced are weather related or fire prevention related. They are always localized to where the damage is. Which is a small area of grid.

In Silicon Valley there is a crazy density of SC’s. If the Los Gatos SC is down I’ll drive to Campbell a few miles away. Etc etc.

In practice, unless it’s the apocalypse, you will always have the option to recharge your house. Something a traditional powerwall can’t do. So in that way it’s superior to a powerwall setup in both capacity and supporting longer blackouts. And is more equivalent to a diesel generator that you can refill. It fixes my main complaint with powerwalls.

If it had time shifting it would be perfect.

Also I don’t know if it’s hitless. Or if there is a brief outage while it switches over. I’m guessing power will flicker. So I have a small UPS on my NAS systems and my network, which uses POE to AP’s. So the network won’t flicker at all.

So as of now you have everything there installed just not connected. So your solar system and existing gateway is still active? the v3 gateway will be on a separate panel/section of home?

Gateway v3 is full installed. The UninWall connector and my house backup loads are all connected to the gateway. The only thing missing to make it work is the firmware which is delayed until March sometime. And won’t be an OTA update. Once the update the firmware manually it’ll operate with OTA updates.

The solar is still connected to the main feed and not the gateway. Eventually when solar is supported I’ll need to move it to the gateway. This will extend backup time. It’s not clear if they will support excess solar charging the car or not during a blackout. I’m guessing not but hoping it will.

My general sense is that V2H is supported but maybe not V2G functions like time shifting or allowing solar to directly charge the car in a blackout. Time will tell unless they release a roadmap of planned features for PowerShare. So powerwalls may have that advantage and eventually might make sense to add a couple to get support for those features.
