With sales down is the CT going to become a Delorean

This thread seems to indicate that selling 70k of a vehicle with 5.6 billion worth of sales is not worth keeping the line running upon demand. Workers can work on the Robotaxi line 4 days per week and run the Cybertruck line 1 day per week if needed. They spent the money producing the line, they will use it. Additionally, if needed to increase sales they will put another body type on top (van, different truck design) whatever to make money. They won't throw away the investment they have put into the line.
Oh absolutely, Elon’s known for his unwavering commitment and laser focus. It’s not like he ever ditches projects halfway through to chase the next shiny object—like X, Optimus, Robotaxi, Hyperloop and Tunneling.

Just look at the massive reinvestment in the Model S and X that just dropped.

And politics? America First? He gives that whole rat’s nest a wide berth.

Rest assured, he’s definitely going to double down on the Cybertruck. After all, nothing says “long-term vision” like a dwindling backlog of orders and a massive stockpile of unsold vehicles.

But yeah, totally—nothing to worry about. The Cybertruck will get all the love it needs from him.

FYI, there is no stockpile of vehicles. I ordered last month and my truck was built in late May. Yes there is a number of Foundation series vehicles out there, but that is because they are too high priced for the value compared to an AWD series off the line. Build quality is better also. As for the Model S and X they are most likely about to be replaced with more affordable Model Y's and Model 3s. Approximately 18.7 billion in Vehicle sales for the quarter will allow them to continue to make vehicles and they have built their supply chain and manufacturing to handle variations in sales for all the models.

Is it really an exoskeleton design? I mean, aren’t the thin steel outside panels just decorative? I fail to see how CT is different than any other aluminum frame unibody, other than it’s like two unibodies smashed together.

What am I missing?
There is no exoskeleton on our CTs.
If Elon days that it's an exoskeleton, then it's a goddamn exoskeleton

The term "Exoskeleton" is no longer mentioned on the Cybertruck website. I am curious if it's the result of legal action behind the scenes.
The word "exoskeleton" is not an engineering term, but a biological one. Lobsters have an exoskeleton, vehicles/aircraft have a "stressed skin".

When Elon calls it an "exoskeleton", it's pure puffery and not to be taken literally.

Tesla Cybertruck With sales down is the CT going to become a Delorean elf-worlds-best-cup-of-coffee-sign

Sandy Munro is a huge Tesla fanboi - he says it is NOT an exoskeleton. Sandy was a big promoter of the original design spec and spent a lot of time and several podcasts explaining why the “exoskeleton” was going to be revolutionary - before the actual truck came out. When it was delivered he took one apart and was shocked at what he found - a conventional unit body construction format with inner and outer stampings, and no exoskeleton - he was disappointed and made a video showing why it wasn’t what he expected. It pissed off Elon because he hung onto the myth that the CT retained exoskeleton elements. The fact is that the exoskeleton was supposed to have the primary structural strength provided by the vehicle’s external panels. In reality it is like any other unit body construction format, with the added “feature” of glue instead of crimped/welded panels for most of the truck (excepting the doors, which are clearly not structural. Do the stainless panels add structure/rigidity? Yes, but in the same way as any unit body vehicle, not as the primary structure as originally promised.

The only reason the exoskeleton myth hangs on is due to fanboi denial and the need for validating TSLA valuations - every promise made MUST be true and anyone denying it is spreading FUD. But even most fanbois would privately admit to chagrin when learning that 80% of the truck’s panels are applied with adhesive. Not that there’s anything wrong with adhesives used correctly, but it was clearly Plan B and not exoskeleton in execution.

Just read they only sold 5000 trucks per quarter. Will they stop making it? Does that mean I better hold on to it? Or get rid of it before the company collapses and I’ll never be able to get it repaired?

I know it’s electrek and they always seem to hate Tesla nowadays but still…

I unsubscribed from Electrek because his content is very biased in my opinion and lately he focuses more on electric bikes which I am not interested in at all.

Sales are dropping, but that’s true for Tesla across the board. I expect sales to recover now that Elon’s foray into politics has waned.

If if “only” 7000 Cybertrucks sold in Q1, that outsold many other vehicles, including:

  • Subaru WRX
  • Hyundai Ionic 6
  • Kia EV6
  • Mazda MX5
  • Lexus LS and RZ combined
  • Acura TLX and ADX combined
  • Volvo 60 and EX30 combined
  • Toyota Supra and Venza combined

Unless Cybertruck is cash-flow-negative, there's no reason to discontinue it.

The DeLorean sold only about 10,000 units across the '81 - '83 model years.
This did not age well "now that Elon’s foray into politics has waned" ?
Regardless, I'm keeping our truck!

I really want a real Cybertruck. I hope someday they make one. I want those larger door openings an exoskeleton could provide so I stop hitting my head on the way in.

That said, it also seems kinda lame to keep the triangle design when it is no longer necessary. It’s like they did a bait and switch to get people to accept the triangle shape as an engineering compromise but then gave up on what necessitated the unusual appearance in the first place. It now just feels like they wanted a “hey look at me” kind of car, which feels dumb and awkward. I accepted the goofy look because of the benefits of exoskeleton design.

As most have previously said, it is unlikely the CT will be discontinued anytime soon. But even if it were , I wouldn’t worry about getting your CT repaired. Tesla isn’t going anywhere and they aren’t going to abandon CT owners.

DeLorean is not a good comparison, it was under-funded and severely under-powered1 Cybertruck and Tesla as a whole will be fine!

My Cybertruck is currently being repaired due to storm damage. Tesla sent dented parts that had to be reordered. That's the sort of thing I worry about.

I have a similar situation. I need a replacement rear bumper due to a minor accident. Tesla Silver Spring set an appointment for installation in June. The part came in damaged so they rescheduled. The second bumper came in scratched so the appointment was rescheduled again. The third bumper came in last week and was also damaged. They apparently received an acceptable part on Friday and the truck is scheduled for installation tomorrow. It’s not an expensive repair but Tesla is losing their butt due to incompetence and basic supply chain issues.

This is just my opinion on this matter. CT when it first came out was all hyped up. Plus, no one has seen a vehicle like this before, ever… Needless to say, Tesla couldn’t keep up with the demand for them. However, just like every product out there, its day in the sunlight came to an end. No I don’t think it was bad press with all of the recalls and so on (like which whole new model doesn’t have something wrong with it). In some sense, that probably helped it in some ways by keeping it in the headlines. The main reason why sales has slowed down is that the people who really wanted it, got it and that’s it. The pool of people has worn out. Trucks, even though, are the best selling type of vehicles in the US are vehicles that people who buy them keep them for years and years. My guess from these truck buyers only 1/3 will go out and buy a CT or an EV truck. EV trucks are not yet ready for actual “work”. Maybe the second or third generation the table will turn. However, there’s a lot of things that manufacturers and especially with Tesla will need to do a lot of things to convience buyers that Cybertrucks are capable.
