but this is janky AF lol
Hah, that's exactly what I used, but on the underside. I added the weather strip, to cut most of the water ingress, but I have the wire for my camera up there that needed to be held up and out of the way of the tonneau. So a nice long piece of flex tape not a single drop of water makes it into my bed now.

I don't have the tent, so the only reason for me to remove the aero cover was to install the camera and fix the leaks.

I used window screen retainer spline to fill the space between the flap and the glass. Took about 30 minutes to work the rubber spline in the space. I do not recommend using a metal tool to work the rubber in the space as I would be concerned about breaking the glass. I just used a plastic tool to work the spline into place and it stopped the water from coming into the vault.

I think this stuff is too stiff and too thin to fill the gap. water might still work its way around it. I used 3/8 inch backer rod which is like 2.5x bigger than the spline and compressible.

basically that spline is raw spaghetti and backer rod is cooked udon.

That may well be an easier DIY solution for some than removing the applique and installing new weatherstripping etc.
Please report back once you have had some water abuse testing!

The spline has been tested at the car wash and on a trip to San Diego with heavy rain. Very little water got in.

since 8/2025 no water ingress. in normal mid-atlantic weather. and you actually dont have to remove the aerocover - probably best if you dont - just push (either the spline or backer rod) into the gap from the top and support the gap from the bottom as you put it in.

I still use the red husky waterproof boxes or my toughbuilt boxes if im really worried about something getting damaged though.

its not supposed to be watertight.

Not sure what you mean by "backer photo". The only item I installed in the space between the glass and flap was the screen spline. The spline package states .155 Dia.
Hope this answers your question.

So you think that water can sit in there and freeze and crack the glass? That’s the only thing stopping me from this solution.
just to confuse, four solutions

1-force Tesla to remedy as it seems 2026 models are fixed
2-install the screen spline
3-install the backer foam
4-install the U shaped weather stripping

1, ive had them take a crack at it once, vastly improved with their work but not perfect, not sure ill ask again
2, cheap, might just order and test
3, same
4, i did buy, this will be my first choice, waiting for warmer weather

I think that the backer is impervious enough that water just runs over it and doesnt soak in. ive survived this winter in pennsylvania with no crack so far at least.

Did you stuff the backer rod on the sides as well?
