Did a software update start this whole thing?

I don't think so. Its been a thing for people for a while. Recently it has become far more common. I'd guess wear and time?

It's also possible that the firmware was updated to better detect a marginal PCS, shutting it down.

If a sick-but-not-dead PCS is allowed to continue functioning until complete failure, I suppose there's a non-zero chance of overheating/sparking/flames in the worst possible location. Thermal runaway would be a real possibility.

As always, I'm speculating completely. But it does seem odd that there's been a cluster of PCS failures reported across a large swath of VIN ranges and build dates.

Mine is scheduled to go in tomorrow but got a message today that the PCS part is backordered now though I do believe some SCs have some on hand but all are spoken for. No current ETA for parts availability but they were hopeful I'd have my truck by next Wednesday but they admitted they didn't know. In the meantime they said drop it off and they'd let me have a loaner CT while in service. YMMV.

I have a 2024 FS truck with an early 2000 VIN.

I now have 12.9k miles and tonight part of the pack failed and am only getting 24 amps. I scheduled service for later this month.

Well today I had a scheduled tire rotation and low and behold last night got a message stating truck would only charge at 24 amps at the house. This had happened one time before and corrected itself in a day or two. I had an incident a few weeks ago when out of town the charging cable at a supercharger would not release. (released from app a few minutes later) Today at service center the vehicle was scheduled for a replacement of the part causing these issues. I was told the part is on national back order but one was scheduled for this truck. Go figure. Sounds like I got lucky today. Service centers have always been top notch with my interactions. Over time most battery charging systems I have owned have all had some part go bad.
I do not think if a charging system has a bad part that the vehicle would shut down. Have any trucks just shut down from a charging system fault?

Very strange this is happening by the dozens now. This has been an issue before, but now all of a sudden it’s erupting. I’ve never had any issue with my truck the past two years, home charged at 48A the entire time; never seen a supercharger, and the last week I get the charging failed PCS pop up and charging dropped to 24A. I dropped off my car yesterday and got a loaner a week before my scheduled appointment because I didn’t want to wait for the 24A charge to also give out, but the part is unavailable and now waiting for it with no ETA. Some kind of firmware/software update in the past month or so must have triggered this in my opinion.

I'd guess they figured out what to look for in the PCS early failure mode symptoms. They coded the system to look for them, call home, and force a failure message before it gets really expensive. That allows them to send out replacements before total failure. So when you come in, the parts are there. Also by sending out parts early, they can be shipped by less costly means. Say, with the standard parts shipments.

It does not appear to be occurring more frequently. If you look at other threads, this has been going on from the beginning. There are more CTs with more mileage, so the numbers grow. My PCS failed in June of 2024 with a list of others around the same timeline.

It does appear that nothing has been done to resolve this as we are seeing brand new failures as well.

Let me know what comes from the vibrations/flapping noise. I have the same noise that sounds above me. Service center visit scheduled for next week.
I got the same flapping sounds last week. I checked, and it's the cantrail on the left side coming loose. Scheduled the dreaded cantrail replacement. Not going to be happy with the indents, but what can you do?

Have we actually seen an invoice from someone that was out of warranty and had to pay?

tbf, i dont think we have seen the latest revision fail. I think @CYBEAST had 2 fail but not sure if the second failure was the new PCS model.
