Smart Charge America (not affiliated w/ qmerit) is a long time Tesla Certified installer that has installed PowerShare at more than 100+ homes all over the country. Tesla used Smart Charge America for the early pilot testing of PowerShare. You can use Smart Charge America for your install as there is no one forcing anyone to use qmerit.

I ‘m using Charge Pro, who’s been a long time certified Tesla Installer. They have to go through Qmerit, at Tesla’s direction. So, I’m assuming that even though Smart Charge it a long time certified installer in your area, the quote is going to have to go through Qmerit also.

Smart Charge America does not have to go through qmerit. No one has to go through qmerit.

I went with Smart Charge America instead of Qmerit. Smart charge quoted me the same install for $10k less than Qmerit. So yea.. I hope Qmerit fails, but with those mark ups, they wont fail, they only need a few suckers to stay in business. Sell 1 rolex or sell 50 watches.

Don’t disagree with any of the comments about mark-up or captive suppliers, but wanted to share my experience. Went through the whole Qmerit, local certified supplier thing. Looks to me that Qmerit is the gateway to the local installer and after you give them all your info, they pick a local certified installer to contact you. Then, Qmerit has to review and approve their quote prior to it being sent to you. So, it’s control and oversight. Maybe needed in this situation, maybe not?? So, I knew that the a good chunk of the $$ was going to be for pulling all the circuits you want the PowerShere to control to a separate breaker box.. I call it an installation for dummies (excuse me for that comment). So, I told local installer that I didn’t want a separate panel and I would manage what got used and what didn’t through my main panel in the event of a power failure. The quote came back at $6,400, which I had heard most of the quotes were coming back at. So, I went over it with a fine tooth comb and it looked like they were putting in an intermediate panel. Called them and challenged them and they agreed, modified the quote, sent back to Qmerit, and it came back at $4,265, which means that with my $4000 credit, I’m only out $265; Sharing this story just for others to be aware 1) the option of not having a separate panel (buit you will have to kill or not use things like large A/C’s, etc.) and they might quote the intermediate panel as a default., so beware.
The Gateway has a built in breaker panel with space for 10 circuits. Unless you have a need for more than 10 circuits, there is absolutely no need for a separate panel.

Gateway has 8 breaker slots.
If Gateway is mounted at the meter and the main panel is in basement, then running a circuit off the Gateway to a new adjacent panel may be less cost than extending all the lines.

Since I and many others are getting only a dual-motor CT and not the tri-motor "Cyberbeast," we don't get any install credits. Just a $2,500 to buy the Powershare bundle from Tesla, to be installed by a Tesla-approved installer. In fact, I think Tesla did away with the install credits for all orders months ago.

Thanks for the recommendation about possibly not using a separate panel. EDIT: Looks like two people chimed in to say the Powershare unit itself has at least 8 breakers.

I'm not an electrician but the way it's been explained to me from a few electricians is that having your essential breakers on a separate panel that can be powered by a Powerwall, Cybertruck, or other power bank can help with wiring. For example, leave the AC, heat pump, electric furnace, dryer, hottub, on a separate panel that wouldn't be powered in an emergency. EDIT: Based on the other comments here, it sounds like those essential breakers could be put on the Powershare unit itself with no need for a separate panel.

I thought there was a "poor man's" version of a Powershare wherein they would simply have a panel or device that-- in an emergency-- could plug into the Cybertruck's 220 volt outlet in the bed without the need for a Powershare unit at all. Maybe some MacGyver can chime in if that's even a possibility.

Mike, we’ve installed around 50 PowerShare units, with the average cost at $3250. We choose to handle the process independently in order to provide an personable and seamless installation experience. Located in Atlanta, GA.

Also, the existing Wall Connector will need to be swapped for a Universal, as there is a 12VDC power/comm circuit that will need to be installed from the UTWC to the Gateway.

Feel free to ask questions!

Thanks,

Lee

How many actual hours does it take to install the equipment and charger right next to the meter and panel, hung on the side of a house? And how much is the material cost? No flat rate quotes. What is your hourly rate and how many hours does it take to install?

Qmerit quoted me 11,000 to do my install. My current charger is 2 feet from my panel. Plenty of room for the PowerShare box as well. Absolutely insane. I am an electrician and that job is maybe 2-3k.

Actually it's about 4 hours to install. Let's say they make $250 an hour, which is way over the average rate. It's $1,000 install. These people aren't surgeons.

I submitted a quote request. If I choose Smart Charge America, can they get me my Power Share equipment and use the Tesla $4000 install credit for my Beast like the QMERIT assigned installer?

Yes, they can. Tesla will pay them directly and provide them the hardware directly.

Well qmerit quoted me 7900 for my install. Includes replacing current charger. Should I just do it? I don't know what other options I have.
