Nissan CEO potential going to prison had nothing to do with it. That problem did not happen until Nov 2018. Ghosn was arrested after landing in Japan on Nov. 19, 2018, and charged with alleged financial misconduct during his time at the helm of Nissan.....
Nissan just stopped investing in the Leaf (the CEO in prison thing sort of changed their priorities).
Nissan had from 2010 - end of 2018 where they did barely any improvements to Leaf.
Tesla went from nothing to shipping much superior products like Model S, Model X, Model 3, all years before Nov. 19, 2018.
Nissan's latest EV, Ariya, coming in 2022 still does not even seem competitive to 2017 Tesla Model 3.
