I believe the real issue is - there is no bolt holding some of the stainless steel pieces on at all. On some, it is only glue. On these sail trim pieces, the plastic frame is bolted on and the stainless steel piece is glued to that. Industrial adhesives can be extremely strong and would pose zero problem. In this case, there could (could!) be an issue due to whatever factors. It’s all conjecture at this point but there might be a real fire to this smoke. I really really hate to say it but I’m worried.

Hey guys, thanks for watching and sharing my video, I have a service tomorrow to replace the 2 panels and I will talk with the manager about getting this reported to the main engineers at tesla, the other side came off last night on the highway, I should've taken it off because it could've hit someone. Thank goodness it was late and not many people on the highway

Regarding the bolt, there is no bolt on the metal portion, it is just a clean sheet with glue marks. There may be a bolt holding the plastic undercarriage in place, but that is still attached to the truck. The tech at Tesla today noticed that the glue marks on the metal strip are rather faint, like it did not bond properly to the plastic undercarriage when installed originally. They ordered a new assembly, and want the one that ripped off for investigation.
On the speed, I was at Tesla a few hours earlier. The expert looked at it, and they ordered a replacement. There was no ā€˜lets remove it to be safe’ or ā€˜lets tape it down to be safe’. I had no idea it was held in place with glue and had a possibility to just sheer off. The leading edge had moved the width of the panel itself, so maybe 1/16th. So there was no gap to speak of, at least a few hours before it liberated.

The passengers side is fine, no movement.

Here a pic of the leading edge.

So there is basically no adhesive left on the stainless?

This is definitely something Tesla will have to address. Hope this doesn’t turn into a major recall. I’m sure every Tesla hater or click-bait influencer will milk this issue to their heart’s content! ?ā€ā™‚

Good to know, but on my truck there's a nut, albeit a small one, one each end of that boomerang piece. Did that break or just come all the way off?

By the way, love the wrap!
The nut on the driver side of mine loosened, apparently not all of them left the factory with thread locker. I had the service center take care of it when I had it in for the wiper motor.

Suppose that answers that. I checked mine and don't feel any looseness. But now I'm paranoid

Good point, rhe wrap installer could have caused this
Just sayin
Have you ever parked in the Arizona sun in summer? The steel gets really really hot. Painful to touch like all cars…how much hotter do wraps need to get?

That nut isn’t connected to the metal that fell off though. That nut holds down a plastic retainer that that decorative boomerang is glued on to.

I suggest moving over to the other trim thread

https://www.cybertruckownersclub.co...re-falling-off-is-this-a-new-phenomena.35832/

The adhesive used in this application is reportedly 3Mā„¢ 08115, it has a peel strength of 30 pounds per inch of width and fractures in the glue (when tested with steel). If it delaminated from the stainless, that could indicate a lack of surface prep.
It is also listed as handling welding operations within 5cm, so it's fairly heat resistant. It can be cured at temps of 200F, wheras PPF has a recommended limit around 176F (80C).

Ok, ok. It was either the sledge hammer or the ball bearing fault.

I hope it’s recalled. I want it fixed on their dime so I’m not stuck with it at year 5.

Complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will start a recall if enough owners complain of a safety hazard.

I hope this issue gets sorted properly, through recall or identification of a limited manufacturer/ assembly defect.

That said, I’m amazed adhesives can hold stuff like this indefinitely. Or at least can be expected to hold indefinitely (or until warranty expires at least, the cynic in me says..I kind of hope they aren’t planning to fall apart at year 7…or maybe they have some planned obsolescence built in…what do I know?)
