Edit: I’ve updated this post with summaries with screenshots of the details of each leg of this road trip below.

Original post:

I just did our first family road trip this weekend - a 470 mile round trip to northern Michigan.
My model:
2024 Cyberbeast with Cyberwheels delivered 12/24/24.
600mi odometer at trip start.
Rated at 301mi at 100%

Efficency numbers are abysmal. The trip was 235 mi each way - 95% interstate highway. Clean roads, sunny to overcast weather. Average temp of 25 degrees F.

On highway my average speed was around 78mph.

I thought I could get there without even charging since I left at 100% (301 mi rated - or 240mi at 80% winter efficency deficit) and only needed to drive 220 mi. But I had to charge twice just to get there: first 100 miles in at 46% - charged to 75%.
Then 120 miles later at 8% to 66% (wanted some extra juice at the destination).

Here are the stats:

avg: 610Wh/mi.
Total: 471miles
Total used: 287kwh

Is something wrong with my truck? Should I schedule an appt Tesla service?

Is it Cyberbeast with Cyberwheels?
Just wanted to confirm the same specs?

Strange, my AWD, all stock aero and wheels, averages just shy of 400 wh/mi at 70-75 mph.

Not a beast though, so I know nothing.

Did you preheat before leaving?
The Supercharging preconditioning chews up energy.
As does speed. If you averaged 78, you.were hitting 80+. Aero energy per mile goes at the square of speed. 80 is 31% more aero load than 70 and 14% more than 75.

Bay City and Gaylord?

Yep, Gaylord and Bay City. - weekend ski trip to Boyne from Metro Detroit. Both V2 chargers (frustrating at 150kw!)

So I did preheat beforehand but I don’t think it did actually, because as soon as we left our home it was “preconditioning” the battery the entire drive to Bay City (1.5 hrs).

that being said my avg wh/mi on the return was 575 - without the preconditioning running for that long.

but yes the speed limit is 75 mph - traffic typically goes 83+. I stayed below the speed of traffic at 78 mph.

we got another road trip planned to Cinci this Friday. Will try to go below 70 mph and see if this truck needs service or not.

wife and kids were not happy about the two 35 minute charging stops just to go 220 miles…

Yep, I know I-75.

The pack was really cold and was getting warmed up for Supercharging all the way to Bay City which chewed up range, but resulted in a faster charge when you got there (maybe, BC has been sub 80kW for me when busy).

BC is getting 8 more stalls, so V4 levels coming soon.

54% to go 100 miles is 664 Wh/mile.
67% to go 120 miles is 687 Wh/mile. That's due to the faster speed, cold weather, and I'm guessing more preconditioning

If you have extra time before you leave, you can do this:
Unplug truck
Put in Supercharger as destination
Go into drive, then park
Hang out in the truck 20 minutes while getting Supercharger level preconditioning.
Plug back in
That'll get the pack warmer before leaving.

I second this. Tesla has already commented that they will be correcting this issue in a future firmware update, so that level 2 charging will be a lot more impactful in preheating the battery during cold weather.

Ah ok, so it must be an issue with my truck. I will get this appointment scheduled!
I don't think it's necessary. Your battery was cold because it didn't properly preheat before the trip. It makes all the difference. Try that trick above and let us know if you have improved results.

Was your route on a long incline? Strong headwinds?

just to clarify here, do I plug back in while I’m waiting for 20 minutes in the truck?
Or do I wait 20 mins then plug it in?

also, that’s great news about BC getting V4’s! I didn’t see anything on supercharger. info about it.
