FSD failed big time. I almost died. No amount of manual intervention could have prevented it. Good thing the other driver swerved. FSD is fatally flawed.
FSD did fail to yield to traffic with the right-of-way. The question I have, is why did you also fail to yield?

It looks like the situation was too tricky for a human driver to realize how fast the other car was approaching. Or did you just simply fail to check for oncoming traffic? Don't you look before you enter another roadway? Having FSD Supervised active is not a valid excuse. Essentially, you are just as bad of a driver as FSD.

And if that was a near-death experience, I have almost died thousands of times! None of them were with FSD.

To be fair, such intersection requires a different approach from a human driver than from a computer - you can't really check for traffic because you don't have the eyes both in front and in the back. Effectively a Yield at an intersection like that has to be treated like a Stop. FSD on the other hand has the advantage that it's seeing in all directions, so it can keep going without slowing down especially since it is also more accurate in estimating speeds and distances.

Long story short... you either have to disengage FSD in such situation, or trust it to do the right thing. I don't see how you can do both effectively.

Interesting, the RED truck was diving with the right turn signal on.... not sure if that has any relevance, but a data point. I also saw no place for the truck to make a legal right turn prior to the merge. No merge lane, so yeah, poor highway design DOT engineers.

When I drive "supervised", I treat it just like I did when riding with my 15y-6mo daughter driving with her "learners permit". I VERY actively supervised that vehicle operator, too, LOL. She would never have gotten as far into the merge intersection as the OP allowed the CT to proceed... and I did not have access to a brake pedal then, so a lot of this is on you OP.

I am becoming more impressed with the self-driving. What It still lacks judgement and forethought and the ability to incorporate experience. Not sure how long that will take to learn an AI computer these traits?

When driving I am looking down the road 1/4 mile, well past the cars in front of me, are they paying attention... who knows? I also try to look behind me 1/4 mile and if I am stopped at a stop light, I look through the windows of the cars ahead if possible. I am not sure the CT does any of this. If you ever do any highway traffic study one will find highways, particularly on multilane limited access roads, are more analogous to the water flow in rivers than cars on a road. There are "streams" that flow into them, occasional dams and places where the flow is restricted or opened up. Traffic acts just like water. I know from experience that on a particular stretch of road the right lane will bog down with merges, I will place the FSD CT into the left lane with the signal.... but then it will try to move right back to the right lane since it is open.... even though the reason the right lane is open is because 1/4 mile ahead it is dead stopped and everyone else has already merged to the left. No judgment, experience or forethought. I wish there was a way to prioritize the left lane versus the right when I am driving. Yes, I know some states have laws that dictate stay in the right lane unless passing... I am generally always passing (safely and legally), and do not like to sit in the right lane for a multitude of reasons. If approached from behind and impeding flow, I always quickly move over to the right to allow overtaking traffic to pass. (Another reason I like a GOOD rear view mirror.)

Agree with all of this and as I stated above this is a very complex and convoluted section it’s more than just what you see in terms of the exit and what I described otherwise. There are two different ways here to turn right and go to the back of the house of several properties including Circus Circus etc. so the truck simply could’ve been immediately merging over to make a right turn here possibly onto Highland. I’d say even, “probably.”

OP is from CA, from what I can tell; locals know this area is a hot fucking mess and you need your head on a swivel (even if you can see forward and backward at the same time like FSD). I would say even a generally “good driver” could get themselves into trouble here if they’re unfamiliar, not knowing what to expect.

I’m really only telling you the half of it. The best way to describe this little section of Sahara in between Rancho and Las Vegas Blvd. is “chaotic.”

I had an almost same situation days ago. I had to took over and merged right as fast as I could, barely having enough time to make sure the right lane was clear. (n)

there is a similar road situation near my home. Seems when it is a much more than 90 degree right turn with little room before merging to the lane, FSD cannot see traffic coming.
I wonder in this case the signal from side camera is not used, or the moving object / vector cannot be properly recognized from the side camera view, or it simply fall in blind spot between the side and fender camera.

the challenge of supervision here, is human would have done differently: human would drive slow to give themselves time to check for traffic. But FSD drives fast in that turn, leaving little time for supervisor to confirm and intervene. One has to be aware of such FSD behavior to take over earlier before an intervene decision is needed.

Mine works great. Over the last 24mos, the progress and improvements have been phenomenal. Relative to its competitors, it’s kind of mind blowing how much and how often it gets everything right.

Why would any responsible driver trust FSD Supervised when Tesla clearly tells us NOT to trust it, to be ready to take over at any time?

There will come a time, probably in the near future, when we no longer need to supervise it. In the interim, I fail to see how anyone could trust it 100%. Even Tesla says not to. Given these simple facts, it seems very irrational for the human driver to fail to take responsibility for their mistake. I don't understand the epidemic of people who want to blame everyone but themselves these days.

Clearly, this is a person who is not responsible enough to be using FSD. My advice to the OP is to stop using FSD immediately (at least until it no longer requires a human driver) because they have shown they are not a good enough driver to even monitor what it's doing in real time. And, by refusing to take responsibility for their lack of awareness, they are unlikely to change their poor behavior. That also calls into question their ability to monitor what they are doing while driving.

I have found that FSD does not always yield as traffic is approaching like that. Ideally, the red car should have seen you coming, moved (they had two other open lanes) and avoided the issue.

At the end of the day, since this version is supervised, it is up to the driver to make any adjustments/corrections should the truck do something incorrectly.

Software is not perfect and drivers need to stay aware to avoid any issues due to imperfect software .
