It would be very frivolous to make a stainless vehicle then put tungsten carbide sheeting on it. Might as well have just used steel and not spent the money on stainless.

No more ideas for Elon please. If it might risk my truck getting here later I don't want it.

Especially something silly like this one

This was reported on Teslarati this morning. One of the commenters said this:

Hardness of paint is about 2, regular steel 4, and stainless 8, tungsten carbide about 9 … but all will see variability in these scores based on specific formulations. Personally I’m fine with straight stainless .. pretty darn tough!

And the response was this:

Just don't try to buff it (wikipedia):
"The primary health risks associated with tungsten carbide relate to inhalation of dust, leading to silicosis-like pulmonary fibrosis."
Coating stainless steel is few steps back when comparing to steel and paint. It's bad for environment and maybe unhealthy for us.

If both of these comments are true then a traditional PPF or wrap would probably be better I'm thinking.

Also, if this has to be applied to the parts before assembly would this create a bottleneck for these cars? I want them to produce 350k per year, not 150k because they added a powder coating.

I guess not scratch proof enough if you don't tell your ringed fiancee/wife you bought a CT without telling them...😉😂

Just release the truck already…
That’s what I was going to say! I don’t care about dust, fingerprints, scratches, bird droppings, whatever. ITS A TRUCK! Not a museum piece. If someone wants to key it in the parking lot, fine. Better the stainless steel than my Blue model.Y.

I suspect this will go the way of the black oxide finish

Tesla Cybertruck Musk: Tungsten Carbide Coating may be offered to scratch-proof Cybertruck. Overkill or oustanding? {filename}

Plus, applying tungsten-carbide requires the use of a lightsaber
You're saying that as a negative, that's the entire reason Elon wants it.

I had looked into tungsten carbide coatings for a 304 SS cam application. It was a plasma spray and expensive. Maybe a sputtered coating? Perhaps Elon is just joking.
... to completely negate the benefit of not needing a paint line. 🤨

Finally, some tenderness design from Tesla. It would be a real treat for the trucker's elbow. Exfoliate you must!

Might not be that costly if Tesla just buys a player in the tungsten carbide coating market....
