With the extra battery weight towing with the CT would probably only get 1mkw or 1.2mkw at best. At $.36 per kw supercharging it would cost you $36 to go 100 miles.
Not so. Even on terrible tires with a rolling resistance coefficient of 0.02 (Cybertruck's are better), a 500 pound 50kWh extender only adds 20 Wh/mile
320 mile range at 123kWh = 384 Wh/mile
404 Wh/mile with 173kWh = 428 mile range

I think you all might be panicking for something that could potentially be good news.. That's a pretty big commitment to back out of for the amount they could have made from selling these.

Likely reason is either they didn't have enough preorders to justify production orrr... they are working on extending the range with the existing or an updated/upgraded battery pack.
That would save a lot of face.
Or maybe the fast charging is finally coming.

Doesn't matter if the vehicle fast charges when all the posts on your route are 150kW...
Nor is it likely that the upper end of the charge curve (which is needed to get the range in low density Supercharger areas) will shift that much

True, but there are a good amount of 250kw chargers out there, just sucks sitting at one seeing 80kw rate of charge on the upper end of the battery pack

Woke up to my email this morning. Kinda bummed out, because that was one thing I REALLY wanted. Going to Montana, and Southern NM where my families live can be challenging with only 300 miles of charge. Oh well. Just have to keep planning. I doubt I could have afforded the $16,000 +tax anyway. So I probably wouldn't have purchased it if it had been offered. I've spent the last year trying to figure out a way to pay for the extender. So it's kind of a load off my mind for it to officially be cancelled.

I agree . There maybe some new battery tech that makes the range extender redundant . Time will tell of course .

Sorry. I disagree. Truck is fine as is. Sure, would be nice to have a bigger battery pack. Sure, it would be nice to have a faster curve. There will ultimately be a faster curve. But… I’ve driven to CO (with and without a trailer), have driven from Dallas down to the tip of Texas. Have towed Boy Scout trailers to numerous campouts. The charging curve is not holding this truck back unless you are a long road trip driver on a very regular basis. For someone who travels a long distance even once a month, this truck is perfectly fine.
The range you have now will not be the range you have in 5 years. You’ll want to account for that degradation before coming to a conclusion on satisfaction with the range.

So.............................

How are we supposed to tow significant distances?

With a lot of stops. I have been towing heavy trailers successfully with my CT. It is a pain, not ideal compared to my F-350 diesel, but is workable. With the heaviest in-spec load and a high wind profile, range is about 100 miles. There are enough Superchargers now to allow me to pull that rig 1,050 miles between my Florida and Maryland homes. Stopping 14-15 times won’t be fun and it’ll take an extras 6 hours, but it is feasible. Last week I did a 180-mile test run with one midway charge, no issues, towed great. I also pulled my ‘51 MG-TD for 130 miles in my box trailer on one charge, with 20% to spare. That was “only” about 5,000 pounds, while the big boat is about 9,500 pounds including trailer, and has a profile like a huge parachute.

We will survive this, but the range extender was something I expected and was promised. The range extender was included in the truck’s specs, so this can be seen as a contract default by Tesla. I took the advice of the sales advisor when completing my order, so did not make a deposit, but did count on it being made available in mid-year, as was stated IN WRITING at the time.

I believe that Tesla made a significant marketing and legal error here, but I also believe they INTENDED to make the battery when the commitment was made. The subsequent inability or unwillingness to deliver still has legal implications because the promise wasn’t hedged in any significant way. This will be interesting.

Compared with the range of rivian Chevy Silverado, how dare Elon Musk say that the cybertruck is a vehicle that looks to the future?
