The tax credit solves nothing. Instead there should be a real effort to make production easier by facilitating resource extraction and refining. The tax credit will increase demand which will drive up wait times and prices. This will make it even harder for Canadians to get a Tesla because our government does the opposite through the Luxury Vehicle Tax. Canadians will see higher prices, longer wait times, and pay more taxes.

More total EVs might get on the road, though.

That benefits Canadians, even if the EVs aren't on your roads.

Well the $40k semi tax credit is not going to help CT output at all.

Come on Panasonic LG and whoever else is going to make the 4680 next year.

I am not sure I am all in with the "at any cost" solution. I will say though just running some numbers with the assumption that Tesla will sell 1 million vehicles in the US in 2023 with a 50% growth (year over year) going forward that equates to ~$128 Billion dollars in tax rebates for Tesla alone by 2030. This could be even larger total with a 10 year duration of the rebate.

The caps though make for some interesting possibilities. Manufactures such as Tesla could include more features like for example larger battery packs, FSD which they already do and other functions such as 4 wheel steering as a software locked feature to keep the price low enough to enable the rebates. Once purchased, the owner can then unlock those features via a payment after the fact thus skirting the EV Tax rebated price caps. Tesla is likely the only manufacturer in a position to be able to do this with their high profit margins.

BMW does software locked features, and GM has done it in the past.

Anyhow, this isn't 'at any cost'. We have barely moved the needle on 1 in 20 car sales. We need to shift it further. And would it be fair to Tesla if we only gave rebates to others?

We need to continue the carrots and sticks until the majority of sales have been shifted over to BEV.

Been saying this for a while. One variant production line, quad motor, sold in 3-4 variants (single, double, triple, quad) software locked for paid upgrade. That way Tesla gets the cheapest production possible, and customers can purchase up front what they can afford.. choosing to get the subsidy or not at time of purchase depending on if they can afford it or not. Tesla gains extra subsidy sales to the many more who would buy the variant that qualifies, and neverending upgrade sales for years afterwards from all those extra subsidy sales.

Every 5 years you can upgrade your own truck!

Everyone happy until random person buys a second hand dual motor that has already been software unlocked to quad motor through a private sale, and takes it in for a recall upgrade to fsd chip and Tesla service center removes the paid quad motor upgrade and tries to force a second charge to unlock it to the second hand owner after he already paid for it in the cost of the used vehicle!

max sedan price is 55k. That will help drive tesla's low end model pricing back down prior to all the increases. And maybe drive some motivation for finally doing that super cheap model they kicked the can on.
not if the parts to get that price point sewer profit. that's no motivation on a low profit vehicle that they don't have a factory for.

In reality, the tax credit should have NO EFFECT on pricing, unless you are being slimy and raising prices to capture that credit for yourself (which yes, Tesla has done in the past).

I sincerely hope that readers of this thread realize that tax credits go to individual buyers, not Tesla. They may have an impact on pricing decisions by Tesla but, as comments on the thread point out, not all buyers will benefit including, of course, international buyers.

I never claimed it did. But if the prices are raised as a result of it, then the builder do in fact get more money as a result.
