Why did Tesla do this? They needed to be so so different? I can see no technical advantage to this design (other than Goodyear getting a guaranteed tire replacement sale). How did the engineers not realize this was going to be a problem and how come this was not noticed on any of the RCs?

Because a solid shape is more aerodynamic. Every % counts when you pile them up. The less dead air inside the toroid curve of the tire, the more aerodynamic it is.

They tried several different designs, and this one was the last one they tried. The compound on the edges was changed, softened, so that it wouldn't damage the tire. Well, it still damaged the tire. Not every design works out in practice like it did in theory or formula.

These are the covers for the all season tires that will be the base option for non-FS orders. They have not updated any of the product images anywhere, so it is most likely that the updated covers look the same as the current ones, just with more clearance.

Not sure where he got them, but they were testing these covers at the same time as the nicer ones, so they did not come up with this design after the fact to fix the rubbing problem. These were always intended to be something different
