Interesting. I've not known about that.

Is it something where the screen tells you "pre-conditioning complete" or something similar?
The pack temp is visible from the Service Menu, or from the 3rd-party apps like Tessie. I believe the screen always shows “preconditioning” while navigating to a Supercharger.

the cooling rag on the handle shouldn't make a difference for V3 chargers as they are already liquid cooled internally. Definitely makes a big difference if you are in hot weather and are using a V1 and not sharing with a paired stall
It does actually make a difference as on the charge cable is liquid cooled. The handle is not and pushing over 600amps in order to achieve 250kW charge rates at <400V is generated a huge amount of waste heat. I’ve seen the charger contacts hit and slightly exceed 60C during peak charging loads and this derates the station to protect the equipment.

The rag is cooling the sensor in the handle (which isn't liquid cooled).

LOL, changing YAML files and messing with containers (especially in Linus) will probably be over the top for some - especially the less nerdy types. Most don't even know what the # means in those screenshots, haha. That being said, this is what I use, it's a great tool.

I don't know about you gatos...but damp/wet rag and high voltage electricity sounds like a very bad idea.

I drove about 20 miles to precondition at 15%, didn't really see a stark difference, but there were about 10 cars at a 16 car location. It was 90°F outside though. I guess my expectations were a little high, but to be honest after 12k miles and coast to coast round trip I haven't really felt any different than any other Tesla I've had except 2023 Model X LR really adds the miles fast (product of efficiency + battery size).

There is a lot of talk about the limitation of the handle and cable recently. Kyle/OoS has done a variety of testing. Branden (below) is in the charger/charing industry.

[UPDATE: When they eventually get v4 cabinets at the "v3.5" supercharging sites that have v4 pedestals (v3 cabinets) and they can operate at 800v that may be very beneficial. Less current/amperage for the same kW (eg 250 kW). Not sure if a similar issue would show up if they push to 350 kW for X number of minutes tho.]

[UPDATE 2: Even the 800v systems at 350kW (vs curr max of 250 kW) should run cooler with lower amperage/current.
625a = 250kw / 400v
438a = 350kw / 800v ]

How about a small fan, plugged in from the bed, to keep the handle cool ?
Wet rags (wring out) seem to be the common trick.

Maybe cold packs if you have a fridge in your vehicle or put in front of a vent between superchargers.

I ran another Supercharging test earlier in the day but still ran into reduced charging rate due to handle temperature. I used the damp rag trick and did manage a better curve, but still experienced throttling very quickly into the session. I also forgot and only tested till 80% SoC but that doesn't appear to be any different curve wise than my first session under 2024.20.7. arrived at 3% SoC in the newest test and was able to add 130miles in 15 minutes.

Much smoother curve in the cold, using v4 chargers (still capped at 250kW)
