Is the tent better than just laying back the seats and sleeping in the truck with climate control?

YES
The seats don't go completely flat, and they are also hard to rotate in.
The back can work if you're shorter than 5'6". Otherwise, no way.

God bless you! I am at the point in my life where I define camping as staying in a Holiday Inn versus a Marriott. :)

I will follow and live vicariously through you! I have driven from Culpeper, Virginia to Anchorage, Alaska. It was a once in a lifetime experience.... ONE, that I hope I can repeat. ;)

Having said that, in that trip, I drove from Winnepeg to Moosejaw, an interesting city!! It was where the prohibition booze was made... plus an AMAZING!!! spa.

Tesla Cybertruck 7796 mile road trip about to begin. Camping the entire trip! 1720645174028-62

One of the highlights of the trip was The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology, just outside Calgary. If you like Dinosaurs the place is amazing!! From there I drove to Banff before turning North for the rest of the trip.

I look forward to seeing your pictures. Have fun!!

I've done that in my TMX at a KOA and that was a miserable nights sleep. Could not get comfortable at all.

Some seats in new vehicles (Trucks and SUVs) are folding flat forward or back. Pretty clever seat design but certainly challenging to meet crash regulations and the mechanics of it.

I keep seeing these multi month, multi thousand mile road trips - do you guys not have jobs, or other responsibilities?
This isn't a multi month trip. It is a bit longer than I'd normally take. Planning on 5 days driving each way. We’ll see if my “plan” ends up being accurate. We go to Oregon every year for our family reunion camping trip. Don’t really wanna fly because of all the Boeing stuff. I remember my dad taking me on a trip like this when I was younger, my eldest is about to become an adult, figured now or never. We probably shouldn’t be taking this trip honestly, my wife will need to go 3 weeks unpaid for us to be able to go. Been planning for that though. I think it'll be worth the memories.

I just got back from Yellowstone for a week long camping trip. One recommendation is to get a RV site so you can charge while you are parked. Another recommendation is to buy some ice for your fridge, as the power outlet won't work while you are AC charging.

What site do you recommend? I was a little worried I’d have to cut yellowstone due to lack of charging in the area.

The cooler will run for 35 hours on its internal battery.

This Saturday my family and I begin an epic journey. A 6000 mile(there and back) cross country road trip.
Nashville -> Grand Canyon -> Yellowstone -> Portland -> Garibaldi(Oregon coast) -> and back.

I'm beyond excited and a little nervous. Haven't driven this long a distance in a very very long time. We're camping the entire trip. Just hope the nights arent TOO hot.

Yes, I hope it's not too hot.

Nearly passed out hiking Arches at this time of the year that may other hikers quit and seeking shade (very few) midway up.

Just returned from Oregon, did not hike as much to see the majestic waterfalls. It hot and got to the hotel with fever.

Be careful as Oregon already reported 4 deaths and health authorities warn it's an insidious killer.

Uses to limit camping to mountains in summer. Now even up there is intolerably hot and swear to do camping anymore without an RV equipped with good a/c.

As to your journey, plan closely specially for charging facilities in remote areas.

Just got back from Twin Falls, Idaho Falls, Glacier National Park, Calgary, Banff/Jasper, Vancouver, Spokane, Seattle, Oregon and Klamath loop trip.

Lots of learnings. First correct decision is to leave RV behind. 2nd, underestimated availability of chargers and time spent charging, gone skeptical remaining range estimate (there are mysterious juice sucking or CT energy drain). On the latter, always have a full charge even if screen is saying "10 minutes charging to reach your destination".

Am not scaring you as you and your family will enjoy it. Plan, plan, plan...

PS -- I was a corporate planner and used Tesla Route Planner, Google maps, Tesla Find Me (charger) website and Excel worksheet. And i still had route diversion, zig zagging to hit chargers and several not-fun charging stops (not helped by watching Netflix movie).

I stayed at canyon village campground, there are three ev charger at canyon village Lodge where is 15mins walk from the campground. However the campground is by reservation only.

Don't skip Yellowstone. This could be your trip's hoghlight.

West Yellowstone is the best place to look. And this is nearest entry point to the national park.

Agree with another poster to get an RV slot, most likely a commercial camping/RV site. But check if they'll allow EV charging (some don't due to some misconceptions).

So what I'm thinking now is, doing Grand Canyon on the way to Oregon and Yellowstone on the way back to Tennessee.
Something like this, Home -> Grand Canyon -> Portland(stay awhile) -> Garibaldi(Oregon coast) -> Portland(stay awhile)-> Yellowstone -> Home.
There will obviously be other stops, but these are the main POI's.
