I was lucky enough that in my thesis work, I was sent down to Florida to lay hands on the two space shuttles we had at the time. One was vertical, the other horizontal. The tiles, the engineer told me, are black to radiate heat out when exoatmospheric. They are non-ablative.

Check out the Thesis if you want to be bored... It isn't about the Space Shuttles.

Wait, the heat isn't caused by friction?
No, apparently not (and this was a surprise to me for sure). Evidently it is simple PV = NRT. The shock wave pressure is so high the temperature goes way up (at least according to the article I read).
