AHHHUUUUM,

Remember last week when I commented on the thread about infrastructure not being ready for EVs. And I said the problem I see is our older homes with only 100amp service?

Yes there are ways to make do, with a 100amp panel. But the future is coming!

Maybe this will be one answer for apartment dwellers. The apartment owner installs a couple of these and has a side income.
Most homes have 200 amp service.

‘’Cybertruck doesn’t need 100 amp charging.

I did _ok_ charging with just 120v for a long time. Cybertruck will be fine with 220v and 60 amps.

My problem is that I cannot take advantage of the significant EVSE rebate from Austin Energy until I have a VIN. Can I charge a Cybertruck with 120V and a really long extension cord? We're gonna find out!

I’m sure you *can*. It will probably be 2 miles per hour, but you can.

Get a heavy duty extension cord, they make them with 10 gauge wire. Hard to fine but they are out there.

if you buy a mobile adaptor you CAN but not sure you would get much from it.. for a Model Y they say you get 5 miles of charge per hour.. if, however you get a 220 v plug and a long extension cord. for it.. you can get <it says> about 35 miles per hour.. i have never used mine so not sure what the actual yield is.

in my experience once you get the VIN.. the car is fairly fast.. the y took em 3 days from vin to ready to pickup in fort worth.

Maybe most homes have 200amp service. But I just did a search and this keeps coming up.

Pecan Street, estimates that 48 million homes nationwide may require electric panel upgrades to fully electrify.

100amp service is very common. And a lot of people think it's a major roadblock to electrification. I know it won't suffice for my situation.

most new-build homes at or over 3,000sq ft are now doing 200amp service

But 'most homes' do not have 200 amp service
I work with new construction and my builder has 200 amp service on 1557 sq ft houses with over half the panel not utilized. That’s also the only way I’m seeing it built in North Texas. Maybe other parts of the country are different.

certainly the way i would build (and cost) a new build of any size, these days - particularly anywhere that has high electric HVAC spec

but nationwide, i was only comfortable asserting that a >3K house would be sure to have it :ROFLMAO:

We got lucky when we had our solar panels installed. I asked about upgrading from 200A service to 400A, and was able to make the upgrade for only the cost of a new panel and supply side wiring. I believe it was around $1800 total.

Yeah, 200 amp service has been the norm for a long time now. Even my small ski cabin, built over 30 years ago came with 200 amp service.

Five years ago I told my electrician I wanted to upgrade my primary house from 100-amp service to 200 amps so I could add a sub-panel to the carport for charging. He took a look at the location of the service panel and said it would be easier and cheaper to just drop a secondary service from the pole in front of my house to the carport, so I told him, OK, just drop a 100-amp service directly to the carport. He said it would probably be cheaper to do a 200-amp service. When I looked at him with incredulity, he explained 200 amp service was the standard, he would have to special order the 100-amp panel and he wasn't even sure the utility would do a 100 amp drop anymore. He said it was unheard of.

So now I have the full 200 amps for EV's and a few overhead LED lights! At least my Cybertruck will be glad he's going to a good home.

Does this mean you have 2 meters and service fees?

That's future proofing.

It's required in lots of states. The difference in cost isn't much when doing new construction.
