It actually is a lot of imagination - not only is there far less resolution outward, our visual processing system fills in some of what we “see” in the periphery

Take a spin:

http://www.uniformillusion.com/?m=1

then there’s the blind spot in dead center of our vision from optical cortex exiting rear of eye … also filled in by our brains
If my brain is filling in the gaps, why don't I see Cybertrucks everywhere

That will probably do the trick. I work around my truck a lot. I think I may do a clear protective wrap early on just in case. I worry my belt buckle or a tool box or electric cord might hit it and scratch it. Since it’s polished and scratch will stand out
So, your truck is going to be a garage queen?

Trucks were meant to be tools. The Cybertruck will age more gracefully than any other truck on the market. A soft painted surface just seems inappropriate for a work truck, even though that's how legacy trucks have looked for over 100 years. Finally, we get a truck worthy of being a tool.

Do you worry that your hand tools and power drills will get scratched?

I’d imagine there will be a few official options for mirrors
A mirror shaped like the CT 'yoke' wheel___ fancy that! Perhaps you could choose 'portrait' or 'landscape' when towing a caravan!

not the first time you and others made this bizarrely contradictory point

“work trucks should be dented and scratched, not look pretty….

…which is why the CT’s 3mm SS will keep it looking great”

which is it: do “real” men not care if their tools are scratched, or do they care so much that they only buy scratch-proof tools?

I think anyone who is active on any of the various automotive forums with attest that most tools don’t age gracefully, but with age they generally become bigger tools.

I think people trying to remove a side view mirror are asking for trouble. The resolution of a human eye is 576 megapixels. The resolution of a Tesla car camera is 1.2 megapixels. The eye is almost 500x better. If you ever study traffic engineering it’s all about reaction time. And better resolution equals better reaction time hands down without debate. My mirrors are staying even though I think the cute triangle shape actually takes away from the geometrical strength of the truck. I bet they were trying to reduce drag and be fancy and I get that.
I am not familiar with the resolution of the human eye but the Cybertruck will use 5 mp cameras and will have at least 10 of them, and unlike the human eye with its imperfections and small focus area (see article from Discovery below), the car cameras have full resolution all the time.

I didn’t see that interview. But I have done some metal polishing and I would think if we get a light scratch it wouldn’t be too hard to buff it out if there is a factory applied polish/grit level. With how hard stainless is, it would be tough to do that initial polish the whole vehicle at home. So it’s really great that they are doing it. Similar to how people polish their airstreams, but aluminum would be easier to polish in my opinion as the metal is softer.
Back '86, scored the Concourse overall 🏆 with the David Jones' 1912 Silver Ghost. Aluminium bonnet, red paintwork and brass tools in both running boards! All by hand with Brasso____7 days of 'Blood, Sweat and Gears!
Can't wait for delivery of the CT DownUnder.

So I don’t actually need WD-40? Somebody else told me I did.

On a scale of 1-10 I worry about tool scratches around a 2 or 3. I like high quality tools so often spend a lot of money on them. I also use them like tools and don’t worry about scratches, but I also put them in a box when I am done with them and no one cares what they look like. You can’t put the CT in the same category as a power tool and anyone on here that says they will is lying. The better example would be if you had a scratch on your front door or your bathroom mirror would you just leave it. Probably not.

I probably have one of the oldest actually functioning work trucks in this group and to spend $70k on a pristine new stainless truck and not care about scratches would be fooling myself. I will put a sheet of stainless in my truck bed for a week and post a picture and you can tell me how acceptable the scratches are. And the CT has not been aimed at the work truck class by any means. It has carpet, white interior an accordion bed cover and a plastic bed. Let’s go to any construction site and see how many trucks have those features. I am in a lead position with a billion dollar contractor (per year). Our parking lot is full of trucks. The guys doing the work drive older silverados or f150s that are pretty beat up. If we gave them all CTs they wouldn’t think about using them for work because they are too pretty. I am seeing the truck being bought by the IT guys who currently have high end tacomas with $30k in off-road accessories. And that’s ok. And when the CT is priced right, people may say who cares about scratches but that’s going to be some time from now. But hey if you are happy with scratches and don’t care about fixing them then that great for you. The point is that for a couple grand if I can put a clear wrap that will help prevent scratches and keep the cool look I will probably do that. I deal a lot with high end anti graffiti and ballistic clear wraps so I could find a great source that would wrap the truck.

I heard WD-40 was invented to prevent rust on military vehicles and weaponry.

What has your experience been with stainless steel that has been cold-rolled to full-hard condition? I'm thinking you are over-estimating how easily it will scratch in normal work use. Do you use cold-rolled ss in your contracting business or where will you get a sheet of it to put in your bed and take a picture of it after a week? In any case, the body of a Cybertruck will not take the abuse that a sheet in the truck bed would (and the Cybertruck bed is not stainless steel so I'm not sure why that is even a valid test).

I also think it's odd to try to protect the cold-rolled ss body with a clear wrap, a material that is much softer than the finish you are trying to protect. Franz spoke of the fallacy of covering the hard stainless steel with a softer clearcoat. The whole beauty of the stainless steel being hardened is that it will be much more damage resistant than the paint found on all other work trucks. And, if you manage to get a scratch, it doesn't require all the work involved in filling the scratch in the paint and repainting, being careful to blend the new paint into the original paint. You can just polish it out with the correct compound to match the surrounding surface. Unlike re-painting which involves a huge amount of prep and masking, the only prep is a quick clean to get any abrasives off.

I guess I don't understand why you think this will not be a HUGE improvement in durability over paint, without having to do anything in particular to protect it.
