The reality is what was put forth in the announcement. The 500 mile variant (if there was going to be one) was always slated to be first. It never came to be, because it doesn’t exist. The $40k truck is what people came to reserve, it cost absolutely nothing to do at $100 bucks. This is why the reservations were out of control and you don’t need to look any further than the Model 3 reveal preorders to understand how this works.
Of the 8-10 people I know who reserved, not a single one was for the crippled model. All reserved dual or tri, mostly tri for the range, and ended up with AWD when that didn't pan out. I don't think your statement that everyone reserved the 40k truck is remotely true. Some people, sure, but not majority.

I’ll hopefully be taking delivery in the next week or two. But I test drove one and it’s the best vehicle I’ve ever driven. Especially if you’re used to driving trucks. The steer by wire and 4 wheel steering are amazing. Then you mix in the air suspension which is high end luxury level comfort. I could see a price cut in the future. But I don’t know how much they can cut it with these current features. If it drops in 2025 I would think it would be 70k bottom. If they get the tax credit approved they probably won’t have to for a while. The end of this year should stay strong. People with businesses will buy for tax reasons.

I really think it has a lot of value at 72.5k after commercial credit.

I’m hoping the future re-design has the following.
- rear view mirror/screen
- mid gate or roll down window
- more range
- smaller A-pillar for better visibility.
- higher tow capacity
- better storage system for center console area.

Not sure why anyone thought the 2 million reservation ever meant anything. $100 reservation fee is nothing. Lots of people reserved more than 1. It's a very expensive vehicle. I only purchase luxury cars for myself, and my Cyberbeast is the most expensive vehicle I have ever purchased. It's a very small market. On top of that, it's polarizing.
I recall a podcast with Elon musk where the moderator said he had reserved 4 of them. Many thought the price was really low for something so groundbreaking, and were hoping to flip a few to pay for their own vehicle. Obviously that didn't work out too well. In addition, many liberals can't stand Elon's politics, and in their circles it's considered anathema, so they've since decided not to go the CT route.

Here’s all I know. Still today, veteran’s day 2024, this thing still turns every head that sees it. Whether they love it or hate it, they talk about it. People at work (who didn’t know who drove it there) were having a heated discussion over it - I didn’t chime in and just let them have their moment. You drive past a group of kids just off the school bus? Put some ear plugs in because they’ll make some noise. Everyone you pass will either be staring, taking pictures or flipping you off. But very rarely is there someone who doesn’t bat an eye. This thing gets attention and there are a ridiculous number of people who want to get behind the squircle. Once tax credits are confirmed or denied, I predict this thing will be on backorder for a while.
I stopped at a restaurant to pick up some food last night. The front of the restaurant was full of panels of glass, top to bottom. People couldn't help but stare at the truck. It was obvious that every single person was in awe of it. Even while I was in line, people were commenting about it, craning their necks back to get a good look at it. They couldn't help it. On my way out, a lady and her daughter asked if it was my Cybertruck. The lady said her daughter was absolutely mesmerized by it. I asked the daughter if she wanted to sit in it and her eyes lit up. "Really? Can I?" Her mother said that I made her daughter's day. She absolutely loved it. It gets some hate, yes, usually by people who can't see it for what it truly is, or those who are blinded by Elon's politics, or those who refuse to see it for what it truly represents, but the younger generation absolutely adores it. It gives them a positive glimpse of what the future could look like, and they are all on board.

totally agree....I'm a long term truck guy and electric fan(multiple F150's in the past, currently in lightning) and wasn't crazy about the cybertruck despite also having a model s.....after I saw one in person it grew on me but still sticking to lightning....then I test drove and wow that steering is awesome, also the size is perfect, just between midsize and full-size......I'm waiting for discounts or used market drops for now but planning on a cybertruck in the future

The $40,000 version only had 200 miles of range or so if memory serves .. it was just the top spec that Tesla thought would have 500. Either way your point is valid .. prices went up for all and specs down for the top end range. I’m hesitant myself as I want a minimum of 400 miles.
Here is how it looked in the 3 categories (price, range, payload)

My brother has a Lightning and loves it. He puts all his tools and chargers in the frunk. Lightning is a better work truck in many ways and I think a very good value now. My wife has a model 3 and I find myself driving it over my corvette. It’s just easy and smooth. I’m certainly a fan. I think they’re better vehicles. Fuel/Maintenance savings is just a bonus.

Yeah, I love the lightning and I at least bought used so I didn't have the initial depreciation hit....it is roomier and more aligned with regular pickup accessories....although I would love the cybertruck range (especially highway range).....my lightning is the SR 230 mile range which is a good amount less over 70mph....the air suspension and aero on the CT is better along with a bigger battery and awesome tesla charging network (I can use v3 with my lightning and the free ford adapter but it is still a bit limited)

Is demand dwindling? Maybe. But, I offer an alternate possiblility.

In April of 2020, I ordered what, at the time, was Tesla's new hotness, the Model Y. I figured it would take months and months to get it. Imagine my surprise when I got delivery notification in 4 weeks. Only 4 weeks! And I ordered really late! I picked up my (our) Model Y with VIN 11,29* . That's right. I (my wife, actually) got one of the first 12,000 Model Ys made.

Surely, since we didn't have to wait for our car long at all, demand must have been dwindling. Surely, the Model Y would soon become just another niche car from Tesla... No big deal. They probably will have to shift the production line to build something else.

Soon, Tesla was offering leases, zero percent financing, discounts, referral bonuses, and free Supercharging. No way will this car ever amount to anything real on the automotive landscape. There's no way that this car which I was able to order and receive in a month will become one of the best-selling cars of the year...

Is it possible we are seeing this story repeat?

Yeah, probably not. Truck people are very brand loyal and it would take a lot to make them un-ass their favorite seats. No amount of "But it's a real truck" talk will change that fact.

I mean, I bought one and have only had Fords for years. (a Chevy S-10 snuck in there for just a little while though) But, I wasn't using the truck as a truck most days anyway.

That's Ty's Two Cents.

The 40k truck had 16% of the reservations.

The ideal that Elon/Tesla have any compassion or compunction about the idea of alienating its customers because of price drops is laughable. Just ask anybody who bought a Model S Plaid just before they cut the price by nearly $50,000 in 2023!

People were screaming bloody murder and they didn’t give a crap. I made out like a bandit on that deal when I purchased my Plaid in September of last year.
I openly laugh at people who get bent out of shape because they bought something that then became less expensive. I also laugh at people who view new vehicle purchases as an "investment". A vehicle is just a tool, buy the tool that suits you, when the price also suits you. And don't cry in your milk when someone else gets an even better deal. I also laugh at people who think a new vehicle is a status symbol. I don't give a FF what kind of car you drive, I care who you are.

I’ll be hosed just like all FS buyers when they slash prices, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles and you can bet your ass Elon doesn’t give a flying fuck.
You seem unaware that Tesla's very business plan, from day one almost two decades ago, was to make the cars continually more affordable to people of less means. They even published it for the public to see. So someone would have to be a special kind of stupid to get upset when Tesla does exactly what they said they were going to do, increase volumes and reduce prices.

It baffles me why you think this is a bad thing, or why Elon should be upset that they are successfully selling ever increasing numbers of vehicles, at more and more affordable prices over time.

That was Elon's stated goal. What do people not understand about that?

These "demand" posts are getting kind of old.
You think?

Kind of like the Model Y had an alleged "demand problem", right up until it became the best-selling car in the world, gas or electric. It even outsold the Toyota Corolla and the Rav4.

Oh, look, the Toyota Corolla has an end of the year sale, it must have a demand problem....

The majority reason was because dealer lots were empty, MSRP pricing was a joke, and Tesla had full inventory of everything. The market made it easy for Tesla to thrive. Some stayed with their Teslas some went back to their other manufacturers. Now that 0% financing is back with most manufacturers; the race to the bottom is on and according to my calculations. The Cybertruck will get 0% financing in December.
