From reading through different people's quotes, there are at least 3 different procedures being quoted.

Main Breaker Separation - Main panel becomes sub-panel of gateway.
Light Loads Backup - Gateway is sub-panel of main panel, up to 10 light circuits moved to gateway.
Heavy Loads Backup - Gateway is sub-panel of main panel, mix of light and heavy circuits moved to gateway.

The 2 load backup options are going to be considerably more labor and material intensive, each is going to require splicing new wiring in the existing panel over to new breakers in the gateway. Moving 10 circuits is probably adding $1,500 to any quote, assuming only minor gouging.

It is ridiculous, they lock you in with these installers with no other options. Ameritech sent my quote to. Me for $5400. I told them a hard no at that price. I can get a powerwall with 35% rebate for not a whole lot more. These companies are taking advantage of Tesla forcing us to use them rather than just let us buy the hardware with our voucher and use whoever we choose to install it… aka bid it out for the best price. Hopefully Tesla reverses their policy soon of forcing us into these terrible companies with ridiculous bids.

i'm finding that all of qmerit bids are extremely high. My local electrician bib was under $1000 and qmerit bid was over 4000. there seems to be a large profit, taking process in their bid process.

The fees for the permit is not the local Permit fee. The charge for city permit was bad because I don't live in the city limits ands it not required?

I am hoping Tesla will ship me my unit and allow me to use a local electrician to do the work.

I did order it to the shop. I did receive the power wall but I did not receive receive the power share portion.

Has anybody been able to Diy?

The wall connector can only push out 60 amps so there's no way it can backup a main panel that's 200 amps or even 100 amps.

Right, just like my 2nd 200A panel can't support the full draw on the 365A worth of breakers that are installed. If I could somehow draw the max from every circuit in that panel it would safely trip the 200A main breaker. On grid, my 1st panel (the one being backed up) will be capable of the full 200A draw (which would be virtually impossible for me to hit) and on Cybertruck power anything over 48A will trip the interrupt in the Gateway/UWC and shut power down. It won't even trip the 60A breaker from the UWC, since the Powershare system will never let it reach 60A. The CT documentation clearly explains what will happen in the Powershare system if that happens.

---
If Powershare Home Backup stops providing power, you receive a notification on the vehicle touchscreen and through the Tesla mobile app. This may happen for one of the following reasons.
  • Your home is drawing more power than Powershare Home Backup can provide. In this case, reduce the load as much as possible (for example, by turning off large appliances).
---

The reality is my 1st panel rarely draws more than 3kW, if I really turned things up and ran a vacuum and a hair dryer in separate rooms I could probably get it up to 6kW or so. Still well below the 11.5kW the CT can provide. I assume the limit is actually 48A per pole, so it might be possible to trip the shutdown with only 5.7kW if I was really unlucky. It doesn't matter how many breakers are in the panel, so long as I stay below the load that would trigger shutdown.

I received my CyberBeast 20 June. Qmerit reached out about 2 weeks later. After doing the online photos and questionnaire I was assigned an installer.
Today my assigned installer provides the attached quote..

TLDR: The final price (after the $4,000 voucher) was over 10,000…

The installer added an up-charge to the Universal Wall Connector ($580 on the Tesla site) to the tune of $1,225.50..

The installer added an up-charge to the PowerShare Home Backup Bundle ($2,500 on the Tesla site) a whopping $3,135.00.. this bundle INCLUDES the Universal Wall Connecter which they already invoiced so double charged and up-charged..

Permit cost $813 ugh..

Over $9,000 in labor..

It’s a simple same wall as my power panel install but the price suggests otherwise.

Qmerit had shown about 2 days for their review then they approved and forwarded the quote to me..

I am in the Dallas Texas area. Please review your quotes and have a savvy friend do it again over your shoulder. These installers.. wow.

$13,880 what the hell?

These quotes really helped me save a lot of time doing the very linear 2-3 week process that Qmerit does. The range I am seeing gives me an objective perspective. Thank you for sharing!

This was my quote. I am guessing I don't need a heavy load or small load relocation? I'm not too familiar with this electrical stuff

Ok you win, I’m moving to your area ?
I really would have loved a nothing more out of my pocket quote like yours. I’d totally buy those installers lunch when they showed up!

These are con men.
I wire a complete new construction home for less than $15k including fixtures.
Also, the gateway is supposed to simplify installation and it goes between your main panel and the meter and does NOT require moving circuits to a backup panel.
Most homes should take less than a full day and regular service call rates would mean most homes would cost less than $1k for installation.

I was originally quoted for the project $4,158.75 - $4,000 Tesla credit, I approved the project and they told me they will start permits with the city, a couple of days later they came back to me mentioning I need a panel upgrade now the project went up by $5,500 for a Total of $9,658

Allegedly I have Infinity Solar (Plano) putting in a bid with QMerit and it's going to start with a 3,xxx in front of it. Total mess between Tesla and QMerit. Contractor is being told they supply the gateway/wall charger, yet Tesla already delivered to me straight from their online store.

Note: I missed the 4k install credit deadline on Aug 9th, so I got the $2,500 credit in my account and just ordered the Wall Connector / Gateway on my own from tesla.com. It already showed up in less than a week.

Does anyone know if these units can be installed by a 3rd party licensed electrician and still be activated?

@gemgem, let me know if you are happy with them, I did not move forward on my previous quote. I agree with @GatorCyber, this should not be a big, complicated job.
