Bundling up all accessories and options seems to be the norm these days. Honestly, this wasn't as bad as I was trying to get a 2023 Subaru BRZ, the dealer wants all accessories, plus $5000 market adjustment, and a few more phone calls I was able to find one for MSRP.

If Tesla throws in Lifetime Free Supercharging for the Foundation Series trucks, then the premium will be well worth it!

Using your numbers and adding installation for the power wall the total is $19,415

In addition to the wheels, tires, white trim, and a few other such missed upgrades - we really can’t say what this comparison comes up to

Maybe more to the point, though: if we’re honest, it’s a slightl weird way to think about/critique trim levels

Just consider the Lightning Lariat ER vs Platinum ER

Originally a $13K premium to “upgrade” from Lariat ER to Platinum. For that you got less range, “better/bigger” wheels/tires, and seats with better leather and massaging function, and badging.

Now, on one hand, I didn’t buy the Platinum for just this reason: the price premium didn’t justify the value to me of the add-ons.

But, on the other hand, this is just absolutely standard approach to trim differentiations and pricing.

There is no marketing/pricing difference between eg a “Lariar ER” / “Platinum” trim differentiation and a differentiation between “Cyberbeast” / “Cyberbeast Foundation”.

They’re all arbitrary combinations of features at some corporate-determined pricing.

Nobody at Ford was looking at the Platinum and saying “$13K up charge is what covers our additional costs of goods at the same margins” - and same goes for Tesla looking at Foundation inclusions.

More like: “some people will pay this shit to be among the first / few ! ?”

I’ve been one of those people with respect to certain vehicles before. But I was never paying the premium because it was a better financial deal with respect to anything I “needed.”

I'm still not understanding this foundation series thing. I think the total value needs to be greater than the cost, kind of the whole point of a bundle. If they included the camping kit and free supercharging for life that would make this much more compelling.

I wish they would just sell the regular trucks and let people go bananas about the accessories separately, which will happen naturally. Folks have waited 4 years and now have to continue to be dicked around with these special (not so special) builds.

Well, the most compelling thing right now is getting it early. Everything else is a bonus.

Sound logic as always. I agree and in this case the options they are grouping with the Foundation releases are options I would be purchasing so the decision to pay the premium for Foundation makes more sense for me.

Now the upgrades included with the Beast vs AWD do not add value for me so AWD is an easy choice for my needs.

Yeah, I suppose. For rich people I suppose no biggie to spend an extra 25% over normal MSRP to get something 3 months earlier than others.

I've waited four years, I suppose I could wait another 3 months and save 20k. LOL
@mark555055c , perhaps depends if people were going to buy many of the said options anyway.

Or maybe people that ordered the Foundation were already planning on getting the options that were offered for pretty nearly the same price? Like maybe a $2k-$3k difference when you take everything into account?

it’s really not the purpose of a bundle

Here’s the analogy, which is very familiar:

• buy 100 widgets, price is $100
• buy 1,000 widgets, price is $900
• buy 10,000 widgets, price is $8,000

You don’t get a “$2K discount” at 10,000 because the widgets are still “worth” $1/ piece. That would be “total value is greater than the cost”

You get a discount at 10,000 because the widgets were never “worth” $1/piece in the first place. they were “$1 if you only buy 100”

Same goes for the Cybertruck.

The difference is only ~this:

• buy 100 widgets, price is $100 and you’ll have them sometime in the next 2 years, when they’re found everywhere

buy 1000 widgets, price is $1000 and you’ll have them sometime in the next 18 months, when they’ll be somewhat common

• buy 10,000 widgets, price is $10,000 and you’ll have them in the next few weeks, and be the envy of your friends, neighbors, and forum-members

That
is the value of a perfectly reasonable ‘bundle’

yeah, if (per post immediately above) you already needed 10,000 widgets, world’s your oyster

It’s all about marketing folks. First adopters will pay any price just to get into a very early Cybertruck.

Will the 1,000 Founders Editions series have a better resale value down the road? it’s tough to say. If they came with better performance numbers I would say definitely yes.

I hate to break it to people, but if you want the $79,990 CyberTruck, you will be waiting over a year. That will also be for the lucky people that get the first invite.

People are ordering the CyberBeast with an end of 2024 date. If you don't want the Foundation Series, you don't want a CyberTruck in 2024.

The Cyberbeast looks to be a better value compared to the AWD from a foundation package perspective. This Cyberbeast total is $19,810, and the AWD total is $15,210. The difference in prices due to the PowerShare installation and lightbar not being included on the AWD variant.

Well, I’m *pretty confident* there will be more than 1,000

but I’m *pretty certain* no one should expect to be able to resell FSD, home-installed power kits, etc., which are a large chunk of the value of the Foundation series

Nope, they will be the ones that are hit the hardest. EVs are a commodity, especially with the Cybetrucks, a couple of years in, there will be so many that it will look like an NPC car like the Model 3 and Y today. Not only there will be many around, but the newer ones will be more desired as Tesla continues to put in new features and tech. You always want to buy the latest production version to get all the latest toys. Just like how Model Y buyers are checking if they have HW4 or not.

The first 10 VINs might have a better collector value if kept well since there is some story behind them ie being delivered by Elon Musk himself.
