I've been watching some terrible hailstorms lately and that got me thinking: Provided that the glass can take or not take a large hailstorm, what do you think would happen to the 3mm stainless steel body and the Alu vault?

3mm OK if it is all around. Not sure about the plastic bits tho. Vault would likely have dents.

Haha, true. Nothing escapes large ice projectiles falling from the sky. Just like the hammer used in the bowl picture. Yet the 3mm thickness vs regular car (0.6 - 0.8mm) will help a bit more.

That's how you build more character, LOL. 0.8mm painted cars hit by hailstorms look really bad, esp the black ones.

Assume vertical hailstorm:

From the top view, the only place with SS are the hood, the edges around the glass and the very sloped upper side.

With that in mind, the hood is the most likely place to suffer damage. It is not clear at this moment if Tesla opted for a thinner SS for pedestrian safety, which would weaken the hood.

Next is roof glass, which again may or may not be reinforced or 'armored'.

Stainless should be fine…unless you get it wrapped. The video they showed at the unveiling had all kinds of things being thrown at the armor glass with no damage but it cracked under large steel balls so no one knows what will happen with the glass. I saw a golf ball explode the rear glass of the parked next to my Model Y yesterday. My wish would be that the glass could handle a golf ball falling 150 feet. A large hail falling from thousands of feet would have much more momentum, let alone a boatload of them.

I was in a half dollar sized hail storm with my MYP.
Windshield cracked but roof glass was fine. So i think CT roof would be fine.

I'd say probably open the vault if you can, if it's aluminum it'll probably dent to the point where it wont open anymore.

I wouldn't worry about the 3mm stainless. If a sledgehammer didn't hurt it. Hail won't.

Thinner though? Idk

Anodised aluminium would explain why the tonneau cover is a different color from SS. Or maybe it has a rubber liner? Either way, I think the cover should hold up if it's as strong as the prototype which withstood Elon's weight

Whoever said the vault (tonneau) cover is aluminum?

the only thing I know is that Elon can stand on it, but why on earth would you go to the trouble of building a truck out of 3 mm cold rolled stainless steel and then make the vault cover of some soft aluminum?

It's probably aluminium because you can extrude the necessary profile for interlocking slats in one peice, which also brings the vault cover cost down whilst keeping the material use to a minimum.

But, being able to stand on something with your socks on, doesn't mean it will be "impact" proof, like the hammer test. Load bearing is not the same as impact resistant. Imagine hitting the panel with a boxing glove, or a spike. The spike has much more force per unit area (pressure) which will locally deform the surface. In this case with hail, the smaller surface area, high density and high velocity will end up having much higher impact energy.

Reminds me of a joke I've shared here before.

An Austrian mountain climber takes two hats with to test on his climb. He gets to the top of the cliff and throws a hard plastic rock clinmbing helmet over the edge, it hits the rocks below and shatters into a hundred pieces.

Test result: Did not Pass.

Next he throws down a knitted beanie, it hits the rocks below but stays completely intact. He wore that beanie till the day he died.

The stainless on my DeLorean was severely damaged by a Texas hailstorm, but somehow none of the glass fractured.

If caught in a hailstorm driving the CT, my fear would be the glass roof. If it breaks, there is nowhere to hide.

I have no idea what it's made of. That's why I said if

I predict that the tailgate, rear quarter panels and door skins will be 3mm thick stainless steel. Since 3mm is roughly the thickness of a quarter I think it will hold up just fine.

I am not sure about the front fenders and frunk lid.

In order to pass frontal crash testing I predict one of two things. Tesla went with a thinner stainless steel OR they scored the underside of the 3mm SS to predictably fold up upon impact.

The Cybertruck will be no different from other Tesla models. It will most likely achieve a five star crash rating.
