if you've ever driven a cargo van that still has the rearview that was fitted as standard to the cab - you'll understand the frustration of looking at it and seeing a blank panel.
Hence the digital one ... they already do the display and they could have mounted a digital one with that same image.

If you say so ...

I do not think that the rearview mirror discussion is about what happens once in a while, or under special circumstances (and yes, I have had jerks ride my ass in the air) but rather about the general case. I suspect that flying in formation is not what the FAA would generally approve of.

Obviously VFR only and not in the system but it's not frowned upon as long as all parties agree. I was just being obnoxious with my post about rear view mirrors in planes. For the record, formation clinics and extensive practice are part of it, we don't just form up like that on a whim.

Visibility, both direct and via mirrors has been one of the most important variables in my satisfaction with vehicles I have driven over the past 50+ years. Given the CTs long windshield, small rear window and large long pillars I will not feel good about completing purchase until I can evaluate visibility.

It should not even be a consideration given todays cameras and digital screens. With all the great new tech in the CT it would be plain stupid if visibility is an issue.

Hopefully we will be able to sit in the CT and evaluate it for ourselves in the immediate future. Closed roped off units do us little good In this regard. With more than a million reservations the needs of reservation holder deserve consideration.

This looks like something that could be useful for the CyberTruck. It can get the mirror view off of the center screen and onto a traditional mirror location. Especially if it can connect to the existing cameras.

Exactly - this is the same storm in a teacup that happened when the single central display first arrived In the Model 3
Getting used to looking in a slightly different place is trivial to most humans.

Wasting space better utilized with other info. Very "busy"/distracting constant motion.

Sometimes if a car ahead of me stops/slow suddenly then I glance in the rearview to see if another car is fast approaching.

A product like this I believe needs to use a separate camera. I am not sure if they have anything out there that can tap into the Tesla ecosystem or not and use the existing cameras.
I'm not sure whether I'll miss a real mirror for those times I'm backing up with the tonneau cover open, but I doubt it. Here's why:

When we got our first Model 3, I kept looking at the rearview mirror out of habit. But when the rear camera was displayed on the center screen whenever in reverse, at some point I noticed I only used the side mirrors and the backup camera view, the rearview mirror became an orphan. And the Model 3 has a better view to the back via mirror than the Model Y. I suspect the same will be true of the Cybertruck.

Many don't know this but you can actually see the car behind you on the freeway through your side mirrors, you don't need the rear veiw mirror. But old habits die hard and most people think the way they do it now must be the best way.

Especially if the view it provides is 100% unobstructed and much wider.

The only Tesla to non-tesla bad habit I have is remembering to turn the car off. That's happened a few times, grab my phone and walk out -- whoops!
I do this too when I get rental cars. I always realize it within a few seconds of leaving the car of course, but I have to get back in and turn it off and make sure I have the keys.

I am so used to just getting in and out of the car and using it without having to carry keys or hit a button to start it.

I 100% agree. I use the center screen display for all backing up of the vehicle on my Model 3 as well. The Model 3 has somewhat poor rear visibility if you just use the mirror due to how the body is shaped, its far better to use a rearview camera for reversing.

I DO use my rear mirror while driving for situational awareness instead of the camera, mainly because I have to turn the camera on to use it and I am used to looking at the rear view mirror for this purpose. As long as the Camera is always on and of a better quality then a Model 3, I think it should generally work fine on the Cybertruck.

I will be carrying a cloth devoted to keeping the rearview camera clean though, as the one in the Model 3 can get really dirty in bad conditions.

That said, I still would have loved to have this as a feature in the rear display, it would have been nice, but I agree its not necessary. The center screen should be functional for this purpose.

Sandy Munro wasn't too impressed with CyberTruck's rear view camera.

Yeah, it was dirty. My Model 3 one gets like that in bad weather and I have to wipe it off. If you clean it occasionally its fine. Road gunk just builds up when conditions are wet. Always have a rag on hand to wipe it down if it looks like that.
