That would be equal to four years of 15% inflation, assuming no predicted inflation (which would be silly).

I'm not saying you're wrong, but...

PS, Inflation for the four years were 1.23, 7.7, 5.1 (so far), and 2.6 (predicted) percents. You'll notice that's much, much lower than 15.0%.
Oh I absolutely hope I'm wrong on my prices!! I'm much more in favor of the sliding scale starting at $50K. It would be vastly better for Tesla's mission of getting the world off of fossil fuels quickly. The trouble is, I have a very hard time seeing any version of the Cybertruck coming in cheaper than the cheapest Models Y & 3. It's pretty much guaranteed to start about $10K higher.

The one thing that might make Elon opt to eat more of his margins would be the upcoming EV government incentives, and the need to get everything 2 motors or less priced to meet the price threshold for that. In my fantasies, I want a fully decked out quad motor Cybertruck. Reality likely pushes me to a 2 motor version if it qualifies for the federal incentives.

End of the day, it matters very little what some government bureaucracy says inflation is. Expect to pay the same for a base Model Y and a base Cybertruck if you're lucky. Good chance it's going to cost more than the Y. You have to use the actual price of EV's to predict the future price of EV's.

Tesla expected Cybertruck to cost less than the Model Ys they delivered in 2020.

Offering CyberTruck at lower costs would do nothing towards getting the world off fossil fuels any quicker. Tesla is production constrained. Lower prices will not sell more cars. If they were only focused on delivering more vehicles, the best thing they could do would be to sell the first 100 or so CyberTrucks for $1M. Use that profit (along with the ~$20B cash they hold) to build a few dozen more GigaFactories. Sell the next few 1000 for $500K, and repeat that trend until supply mirrors demand. Tesla shouldn't pull any demand levers until demand warrants it.

Ford and GM dealers who sold Lightnings and Hummers for double the MSRP did it because there were customers who would pay it. The windfall from these high margin sales didn't help Ford or GM to build more factories, they helped some hometown dealership owner buy a new boat.

since we'll never know about the prepandemic price because of well, the pandemic, you're wrong about the M3 price.

...by reducing the possible market for their trucks? And cementing the opinion that EVs are only toys for the rich?

-Crissa
It works for Gucci, and Rolex, and Rolls Royce, and Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Tiffany, etc. And there are many examples of brands that took their products down market as the brand began to lose its luster. Cadillac started offering lower priced models to draw in new customers. Mercedes has done it too. Clinique, Ralph Lauren, Vidal Sassoon.

My point is that it doesn't help a company to succeed in its primary mission to if they squander away profits while they are hugely desired and can't make enough to satisfy the demand. Even if Tesla decided to become a non-profit in their quest to replace every ICE vehicle, it would help their cause to squeeze every bit of revenue out of early adopters while the opportunity lasts. If they bank $T they'd be able to eventually give EVs away to ICE owners who had no income. Strike while the iron is hot.
