What about the family towing the camper?
I haven't seen that one. Got a link by chance?

People who rock crawl and the like abuse their vehicles in a way I would never. I use my stuff and expect it to pull a trailer or haul material in the bed. If I could rent a truck 20 times per year and use a trailer for bed sized loads the rest of the time, I could probably get by with an SUV in truth. But I don't wanna...

Thanks @mongo ! Learned something new today

My next question is the wtf broke?

From your images the rear under body does not have an aluminum cross beam at the rear. In Dieselgate part 1, it looks like the rear hitch snapped off half of a rear aluminum cross beam

Apologies that I don't have a screen capture or a frame-by-frame video analysis

In Dieselgate part 2, dude says that Tesla couldn't repair the snapped aluminum section... but in your diagram they actually could (if they had a spare whole rear underbody casting)?
The frame sheared where the hitch receiver attaches. Block hit probably fractured the castings making the top a hinge, then the tow overloaded that connection (after pulling the F-150).

Yeah, they might not be able to fix that casting (technically not repairable), but they can replace the entire piece.

But is this a risk to the general public. And if so it needs addressed wether easy to fix or not.
Wait, what risk?
I was attempting to link what WD said to reality. The truck is fixable, even if that casting is not.
Tesla's collision guidelines are there to ensure safety of repaired vehicles.

Have a look at this video, you will have a much better idea where the frame snapped. You can clearly see the hitch mounting hole at the 18 minutes mark. The frame rail section's procedure is still in development (and parts can't be order yet) but if it ever becomes available, it will be a much simplier fix then replacing the complete rear under body, which can be done too.

The one mentioned in the whistling diesel video.

I never understood “safety chains”. Being chained to a runaway trailer doesn’t sound very safe ?‍♂
It significantly reduces the chances of your trailer becoming a massive projectile that will head-on collide with vehicles in an opposing lane.

To be clear
- I was joking, and
- the chains are to handle the trailer dismounting the ball, and
- if you're able to rip out the hitch, the chains won't really help!

100. Having had a hitch fail- not locked on properly, user error- the chains were a godsend. Trailer stayed with the truck and I stopped without flinging the trailer past me like an Allstate TV ad. I could hear the sparking/scraping from the cab of the diesel truck I was driving and it should be even more obvious in a quiet CT.

They are safety chains, not ornamental chains!

I hadn't actually watched the first video completely.

The portion where he discovers the hitch is kind of ridiculous. He discovered it by running in reverse into a pile of logs pedal to the floor.

The crumple zones of the castings were compromised at this point.

So basically to sum it up, aluminum of the CT cracks and breaks while steel in the F150 will bend. Aluminum is light and strong, but breaks. Steel is strong and bends, but is heavy.

Each has a tradeoff. But I think that the part that snapped off should have some steel reinforcement that would prevent such a catastrophic failure. Should be simple enough, no? Especially if towing something 11 thousand pounds. Don't want a trailer that heavy breaking away and flying down the road.

I really enjoying watching WD's videos, they are hilarious. I also think Tesla makes amazing, ground-breaking products that also may have flaws that will be improved over time. This is Tesla's first attempt at a truck and I am very hopeful they will make a revised CT that is even better.

Every material has strengths and weaknesses. Aluminum is great for getting high stiffness and....
