General Motors CEO Throws Down the Gauntlet at Ford, Rivian Electric Trucks
10 Dec 2021, 00:15 UTC ·
by Stephen Rivers

As we get closer to its public debut at CES, the all-new and fully electric Silverado EV is apparently so good that Mary Barra is throwing serious shade at all of her competition. That includes specific digs at both Rivian and Ford. Here's what's giving her that kind of confidence.

It sounds like General Motors is chomping at the bit to reveal the new Silverado, even though they've also just confirmed that the public can't have it until 2023. That will certainly put it behind the Rivian R1T, which is already out, and the HUMMER EV which is supposed to reach customers' doors any day now.

Tesla has also promised deliveries of the Cybertruck by then, but we aren't holding our breath on that one. Then there's the Ford F-150 Lightning which seems to be on schedule for a spring 2022 delivery date.

Despite coming in what could end up being fifth in the first to market competition, Barra says that the Silverado EV will be "unmatched."

I think when you see the timing that the Silverado will be available, and what that vehicle offers, I think is unmatched... I think that’s going to make a big difference," she said.

While she didn't divulge any new tidbits about the truck, she did hint at what she thinks might be some of its special sauce by saying that it might “educate people on what you can do with an electric truck when you have an electric truck platform.

That's a direct knock on the Ford F-150 Lightning, which is largely based on the ICE truck. Then she took aim at Rivian by saying that General Motors is the leader in EV tech.

"“For start-ups that are only focused on one area, luxury segments, etc., those are obviously competitors that we treat very, very seriously, but when General Motors puts its scale, its highest loyalty in the United States across our brands, we have a lot of assets that we’re going to bring to the party.”

These are all nice things to say about the truck and the technology you have coming to market. Nevertheless, the Silverado EV is going to have to back it up with real-world practicality and value. The F-150 Lightning seems poised to do exactly that, and the Rivian R1T has already done it despite a high price tag.

So CES is Jan 5-8. I'm guessing the Tesla annual meeting will be sometime after that. So it will be interesting to see if Silverado has any surprise functionality that might get rolled into Cybertruck. At this point I doubt it but if Silverado is supposed to be so much better than Lightning, there may be some cool features. Let's see what they have to show for themselves.

Watch it be a Cybertruck knockoff.

Tesla’s annual shareholders meeting happened a month or so ago in October (I think maybe September). There will be a quarterly earnings call in January, which is what I think you are referring to. Usually near the end of the month so likely the 26-28th.

Sounds like there will be something about the Cybertruck there. At least some update to the timelines. …

we hope.

Mary Barra “Silverado will be “Unmatched”…

Here’s the thing, we already know Mary Barra’s strategy with regards to talking about Tesla. Every time it’s mentioned she writes it off as being a luxury brand not a mass market brand.

She isn’t going to bother trying to compete with the Cybertruck… she’s going to position it as “not a competitor”. That’s how she claims GM “Leads” even though GM isn’t even shipping a damned EV right now. GM was the first “Mass market” brand to release EVs.

So she will pitch it directly against the F-150 and maybe the Rivian and ignore the Cybertruck. The media won’t call her on it. They need her too much.

Wow, the main reason I am buying the Cybertruck is because of the experience I have had with my Silverado. The problems I have had to put up with or fix myself were also ignored by GM when I contacted them for help just after the warranty expired on my $45k truck. They really just need to copy the Cybertruck as it addresses the problems I have had right out of the starting gate. I know it’s not nice to bash a product on a public forum but I am still pissed about it and GM has not helped me one bit. So here is my airing of the grievances with GM and the reasons why Mary Barra’s statement “Silverado will be “Unmatched” hits a nerve with me.

1. AC system…It is a known problem with my Mexican made 2014 Silverado that the ac condenser forms cracks in the condenser welds allowing R134a refrigerant to escape to the atmosphere. This happened to me at 37,000 miles (1000 miles over the warranty). This happened to so many people that GM could not make enough replacement condensers for people to purchase from them for well over a year leaving Silverado owners with NO air conditioning on a fairly new truck . After a year of this a third party vendor released a replacement condenser on Amazon. With this new part I had to move the radiator to get to the condenser and teach myself the proper way of evacuating, lubing and refilling the system after I replaced the condenser.
CYBERTRUCK solution- OCTOVALVE…it is underappreciated how great it will be replacing an A/C system with this brilliant solution.

2. Rust preventative frame coating peeling. There was a GM recall on this, but it happened to my truck outside of the recall coverage period and GM would not help me. My frame is so rusted I had to replace my spare tire mount under the bottom of the truck.
CYBERTRUCK solution -SS Exoskeleton

3. Bus cables that transfer signal from the door controls broke on both front doors disabling all controls. Once again not covered by GM all though It was a widely known issue. I had to disassemble the doors on my truck with 39k miles to replace the bus cables.
CYBERTRUCK solution - Unified wiring harness (No independent signal cables going to everything like in the Silverado which saves the need for lots of cable)

4. cancer on the bed wheel wells. All Silverados get it sooner or later. Mine has the dreaded rust bubbles coming through the paint.
CYBERTRUCK solution - SS skin

5. Silverado horrible lagging voice activated controls and delayed back up camera. The human interface software which I never asked for seems like a 5 year old wrote it.
CYBERTRUCK solution- Hardware 4 computer and over the air software updates.

I can go on and on as this is just the top of the iceberg….can’t wait for my Cybertruck

Will they be letting people drive it at CES?

I just don't see how they can be competitive when they haven't shown any technology. At least Ford showed us how they planned a new frame to fit battery packs. And let people test drive the early prototypes.

It will be a Chevy truck with a battery. The headlight might be different and probably a bigger display screen.
Mary Barra did say the Silverado will "have an electric truck platform.

My guess their killer feature will be V2H back up generator power.
And 4 wheel steering and possibly crab walk mode.

The available * segment-leading fixed-glass roof, offers expansive visibility, increased headroom and an enhanced experience for both front and rear passengers. This is the first application of a fixed-glass roof on a GM pickup.

The clean sheet of paper BEV Silverado has the potential to be a real contender in the full size BEV pickup truck segment. We will soon see if GM thought outside the box or will it be an electrified version of a traditionally styled pickup.
