4WT below:

.....

Kyle with GM towing engineer:

Kyle 2023 video
says payload capacity is 1,400 lbs.
Total trailer weight was 10,000 lbs (weight of trailer + load on trailer load) with tongue weight of 1,000 lbs (10% of total trailer weight).

So only 400 lbs payload capacity left for driver, passengers, and gear/tools/coolers/luggage/stuff in frunk+cabin+bed.
Only 400 lbs !!!!!!

Even if Silverado EV non-towing range is 440 miles and when towing large load the range is 50% less (220 miles. which is great for EV truck) the Silverado EV is pretty much only towing because there will be no payload capacity left, possibly for barely any passengers (maybe only driver) and likely almost no gear/tools/coolers/luggage/stuff in frunk+cabin+bed.

I don't understand how Kyle can supposedly run these "great" tests but don't mention each truck's payload capacity and especially the payload capacity remaining after the total trailer load. The TFL video crew just barely mentions payload capacity and how most people will probably not have enough with Silverado EV.

--------------------------------

ICE Silverado 1500 WT RST: 2,130 lbs payload

ICE Ford Ranger 4WD 4dr Crew Cab (mid-size truck): 1,711 lbs. lbs payload

EV Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat 4dr SuperCrew 4WD: 2,000 lbs max payload

EV Silverado WT RST 4WD 4dr Crew Cab: 1,400 lbs max payload

Cybertruck Foundation AWD: 2,500 lbs payload *** higher than ICE Silverado 1500!!

--------------------------------

** Silverado EV towing trailer and might be able to support some 5 people but then maybe NO gear/tools/coolers/luggage/stuff in frunk+cabin+bed.

You asked about 4WT and I answered.
The non-towing is above too. You keep pivoting.
Chevrolet provided what Tesla promised in 2019 and people loved it.
....
Chevrolet only provided non-towing range of Tesla 2019 Cybertruck promise.

Towing is total trailer loaded weight & truck payload. Chevrolet did NOT met approximate Tesla 2019 towing because Chevrolet payload remaining when towing is so low that if you have a large towing load you can't have almost anybody in cabin except driver and almost no gear/tools/luggage/coolers/stuff.

I think payload is often understated by the manufacturer erroring on the very cautious side. Seems like a small issue.

Cybertruck payload would also be affected by an extended range battery pack taking up ~3'x3'x4' of bed space and 750+ lbs.

Besides there is a correlation from a towing range to a non-towing range. Towing is way harder on the drivetrain and cooling system.
I watched the 4 towing test, very interesting. I skimmed the two hour long vid but it looked like it's towing. I pivoted nothing.

Tesla said 500 miles and will get 470, that's fine. GM has said a lot and cancelled a lot.

Might not be such a small issue if found liable in accident and your insurance or other guys insurance makes issue of it. They easily could claim you would have been able to stop sooner or not lost control if you had not been overweight.

certain states require all RVs over 10,000 pounds to stop. Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Rhode Island, Washington (State), and Wisconsin require private RVs, specialty vehicles, passenger vehicles, and ** trailers over 10,000 lbs ** to stop.

Weigh Stations - AAA Digest of Motor Laws
There are several states listed that have blanket statements about vehicles (not just commercial vehicles but VEHICLES) that have a GVWR of 10,000lbs or more.
For example, Arkansas says "The following vehicles must stop at weight/inspection stations: (1) agricultural vehicles; (2) passenger or specialty vehicles, whether single or in combination (towing a trailer) with GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or more; (3) commercial trucks with GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or more."

If the Cybertruck range extender weights 750 lbs the Cybertruck would still have several hundred lbs more usable payload capacity than Silverado EV.

If we stick to what is available now, the Silverado WT EV is not better at long distance towing of medium to large loads than Cybertruck except if the Silverado WT EV only has driver and only a little stuff. A real work crew or large family and lots of normal stuff and towing medium to large loads has zero range because resulting payload would be way over limit and legally not allowed on public roads. If in accident, the insurance company for Silverado WT EV or if struck another vehicle/property/person their insurance company will be looking to make extra negligence or liability claims.

I don't believe GM will stick to many of the metrics and/or prices. Given the current Bolts and the 2LT Equinox have been cancelled, maybe even the LT Blazer is in danger of being cancelled.

I don't have a need to tow. Most people who have trucks don't tow anyway. The CT and Rivian are still my favorites.

A side note, the stated mi/kWh on JerryRigd video certainly shows a 200+ kWh pack. That's likely 234kWh that's found in the Hummer EV currently. That's a huge pack, and shows how inefficient the Silverado EV is.

Even though the Cybertruck has a higher cd than Rivian it seems the CT may have a higher mi/kWh.

No worries. I skip various parts (middle) of some of those videos.

BTW for anyone that cares, I don't know what BEV truck I'm going to get yet. Heck I may end up with the CT if the pros (v2 supercharger access where I travel, FSD, carefree parking, ...) outweight the cons (a fair number in my view).

We all have different criteria and I love the competition to help push each manufacturer. Love that we all have options.

Aside: v2 vs v3 superchargers from several months back.

Other videos have shown pretty bad range, although they were rather fast highway tests.

It looks hopeful seeing 304.

What Silverado did is the elementary school brute force method of slapping in more battery, adding 2000 lbs of extra weight. Of course payload capacity will be low. It’s not because they are trying to be on the cautious side, and it’s not a small issue. Are we really that naive to think that Silverado delivered what Tesla promised in 2019 for Cybertruck? All they did was to add more battery, increasing the charging curve, curb weight, and lowering payload.

I’m imagining in my head how Chevy board meeting might have gone - Boss, we have to beat Tesla, how do we do that? Just add more battery. Problem solved! On the other hand, Tesla literally reinvented the entire Truck from every perspective- structure, steering, electrical voltage, vault, etc. They literally had to build their own casting and stamping machines, and invent a whole new alloy for the body. Please go checkout the in-depth engineering discussion on these topics. It’s all there on YouTube.

It’s very disappointing to see these threads where we are fixated on that one number on spec sheet - 400 miles, and crowning Silverado as the savior of EV truck when it comes to range, without truly understanding the engineering aspect of CT. One might say they don’t give a S***, CT is 300 miles and Silverado is 400 miles. Good luck with that logic. Time will tell who is going to survive in the long run. I’m betting on the winning horse - Cybertruck! I don’t have anything against other trucks. I just can’t bet on products that don’t innovate and push the boundaries. I would rather go with Ramcharger that has 900 miles range in hybrid mode and 150 miles on pure electric. They are doing something better than just doubling the battery size.

You are being misleading. Many criteria has been pointed out a few times (see below).

The CT is more lifestyle than the others. The other manufacturers certainly celebrated when the final version of the CT came out. They know the general truck market and have empirical data on how their trucks are used in all the categories ... thus they can build theirs to fit statistically what they 'needed' to target. It is that simple.

Chevy Silverado EV RST functionality
  • bed adjust length,
  • tailgate opening options,
  • removeable and storable rear window,
  • midgate lets you care 10+ feet items "inside"
  • ~400+ range,
  • HUD display,
  • electric rear view mirror!,
... blows away Cybertruck
